General Motors India's small car Chevrolet Spark will soon be launched in the electric version on Indian roads. Chevrolet India has forayed into a technology tie-up with Reva Electric Car Company. The main aim is to produce green cars and the Bangalore based Reva is set to assist in the endeavor.
General Motors India, Vice President P Balendran said "While Reva will provide the technology, GM will do the engineering and manufacturing of the green cars." The D-segment sedan 'Chevrolet Cruze' was launched here on Tuesday and talking about the sales, Mr. Ankush Arora, vice-president (sales, marketing and aftersales), GM India, said "The D-segment car market in India was currently pegged at 4,000 units a month, which was expected to grow at 10-12 per cent next year". He added "We expect to sell 800 units of Cruze a month to start with and take the number to 2,500 by the end of this calendar year." He said the company had received 1,200 bookings for Chevroler Cruze in the last 15 days, of which close to 65 are from Hyderabad.
At its Halol (Gujarat) and Talegaon (Maharashtra) manufacturing plants, Chevrolet India plans to export 20 per cent of the production starting 2011. The two facilities have a capacity of 225,000 units a year. The company is also setting up a new line with a 160,000-unit per year capacity at Talegaon in order to manufacture petrol and diesel engines, which will go on stream towards the end of next year.
Cars from Reva never became hugely popular in India due to the high prices and the fact that the initial version of the car suffered from low build quality. Government subsidies were non existent and the car suffered from limited range and it was powered by the lead acid battery. But the newer versions namely NXR and NXG will change the perception as the car will escalate to improved battery technology.
The technology tie-up between General Motors and Reva is certainly going to yield positive results as the product is slated to be India's first real electric car.

Toyota Unveils Prius: Small Car in India Early Next Year
The world's largest car maker Toyota has announced plans to launch hybrid car 'Prius' in India early next year.
Talking to a group of visiting Indian journalists in Tokyo, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) Vice-Chairman Kazuo Okamoto said "We will be introducing our hybrid car (in India) sometime in the beginning of next year and it will be Prius." He added "We are not at all thinking about a hybrid small car right now. However, in future it is possible but nothing has been decided". He also said that there were no plans to bring in a hybrid small car but Toyota is planning to launch a small car in the Indian market in 2011. "Technically, the new small car platform is capable of being used for a hybrid version. But there are no specific plans for it currently," he said.
Mr. Okamoto confirmed that at this moment, the new small car being developed by Toyota for emerging markets like India would be the cheapest-ever made by the Japanese company and though efforts are on to reduce costs of future models, Toyota is unlikely to consider making an ultra low-cost passenger car on the lines of the Tata Nano or the proposed car by Bajaj-Renault.
Toyota Prius is the highest selling hybrid model of TMC with a growing global sale of over 1.4 million units since the year 2000. The company's foray into hybrid vehicle segment in 1997 and in August this year, surpassed the two million mark in overall global sales.
TMC's Project General Manager (Research and Development Management Division) Yutaka Matsumoto mentioned that the company is working on a number of models like bio-fuel, natural gas and hydrogen vehicles as part of its global strategy with an aim to grow in the alternative technology market. The company would start leasing out 500 units of Prius with lithium-ion battery in Japan, US and the other European Union countries.
"Pricing is very important. Toyota is looking very positively with this small car to mark a strong presence in the country," Noritake said. In order to reduce cost of production, he said the company is looking at sharing components from other models with the proposed compact car.
"It is very important to reduce the cost. Commonalisation of components of various models is helpful and now we are assessing this aspect," he said, adding that a major portion of the components will be sourced locally. "But we are also considering to supply parts from the ASEAN countries such as Thailand and Indonesia to bring down the cost of the car," he said.

New Tata Indigo MANZA Launched at Rs 5 Lakh
Tata Motors launched its new generation sedan, the Tata Indigo MANZA. Built on its new car platform, the Tata Indigo MANZA succeeds the highly successful Tata Indigo, which became a best-seller in the very first year of its launch in 2003 and has since then sold close to 275,000 nos of the range.
Speaking on the occasion of the launch, Mr. Ratan N. Tata, Chairman, Tata Sons and Tata Motors, said, "The Indigo Manza is a modern, contemporary sedan on a new car platform that has the potential to emerge as a class leader."
The Tata Indigo MANZA is an altogether new car. A complete new body on a new platform houses an all new interior and makes a bold styling statement. With a length of over 4.4m, a width of 1.7m, and a wheel base of 2,520mm, the sedan has grown in size and thus in interior space. The front wraparound three barreled headlamps - one of the most striking headlamp units on any car in India - add to the linearity while giving the Tata Indigo MANZA a feline aggressive appearance. The large 15" wheels, ensconced in their flared arches, give it a higher and more commanding stance. The chrome inserts on the rub rails and outer door handles add that touch of class. The new rear monolithic angular shaped tail lamps give the profile an unmistakable noticeability for following cars. The trunk has a capacity of 460 litres to meet every need of travel.
The Tata Indigo MANZA is designed to offer the very best in comfort, both for the driver and passengers, compared to any other car in its category. The spacious right inclination rear seats with a centre armrest, allow one to sit back and relax, in a living room like comfort and ambience. The interiors exude a fine blend of technology and luxury. The rich two tone fabric endows the cabin with a warm feel. The tilt adjustable power steering with a height adjustable driver seat allows a comfortable driving posture. The car comes equipped with electronically adjustable and controlled Outer Rear View Mirrors. The driver information system on top of the central console provides information on fuel consumption and ambient temperature, while the sporty instrument cluster shrouded in the swoop of the soft-feel dashboard completes the styling statement. A 2 DIN Music System offers connectivity with a USB port and Bluetooth connectivity through the Blue5, a feature not even available in premium cars. The audio controls of the music system are mounted on the steering wheel, for ease of access while driving.
The safety features in the Tata Indigo MANZA include a collapsible steering column, Anti-lock Braking System and Dual Frontal Airbags amongst others. Instead of the usual red line on the tachometer, the Critical Rev Indicator needle turns red when the engine crosses a critical RPM. The engine immobilizer and the central locking feature are conveniences for additional security.
The drive refinement of the Tata Indigo MANZA stems from the internationally-acclaimed 90 hp Quadrajet Diesel and Safire Petrol engines, sourced from Fiat. The petrol engines are configured using a Continuous Variable Cam Phaser, which smartly adjusts valve timings and intervals for power delivery. In addition, the electronically controlled Intelligent Port Resizer (IPR) function in the Safire engine delivers a perfect balance of power and economy. The Quadrajet diesel engine features a Variable Geometry Turbocharger for smoother running and an aluminum bedplate along with superior insulation that reduces NVH levels while delivering a superior power to weight ratio. The Drive by Wire technology virtually eliminates all "throttle lag" leading to a faster, smoother response.
The Quadra jet diesel is certified by the ARAI to give a mileage of 21.02 kms to a litre, while the Safire Petrol is certified for a mileage of 14.5 kms to a litre.
The car comes with a warranty of 2 Years/75,000 kms, amongst the best in the industry, and will be available in a range of 7 colours through 224 dealerships with 493 sales points across 401 towns in the country. The car is priced at Rs. 4.8 lakhs ex-showroom Delhi for the petrol Safire for the base Aqua version going upto Rs. 6.75 lakhs ex-showroom Delhi for the highest Aura+ version of the Quadrajet diesel.
A rationalised portfolio of the existing Tata Indigo range - the Tata Indigo CS, Tata Indigo XL and the Tata Indigo Marina - will continue to exist. Between the existing Tata Indigo range and the new Tata Indigo MANZA range, customers will have a choice at every step of the Rs. 3.73 lakhs– Rs. 6.75 lakhs price range.

Hero Honda Karizma ZMR will be available with new graphics and re-profiled body work. The Hero Honda Karizma ZMR Fi will be available in colors like Diamond White, Deep Red, Sapphire Blue & Midnight Black.
Hero Honda Karizma ZMR has retained most of the features like the 223cc engine but gets itself a fuel injection technology which increases the power by 16.8PS to 17.6PS. It incorporates fuel-injection which has replaced the carburetor. It looks like Hero Honda is inspired by its competitors; and gone ahead with the incorporation of an oil cooler which might remove some of the heat, off the air-cooled engine. It has a redesigned rear quarter panel and an all new LED tail lamp that makes up the external design changes in the new bike. The bike looks classy with a gold colored engine with front forks and iGRS; carried forward from the hunk.
Hero Honda has assured that the bike is not merely a cosmetic upgrade; nevertheless the upbeat changes in the exterior and designs will establish the bike as an all new bike. Hero Honda Karizma ZMR features a full fairing that covers the entire engine to pronounce the big-bike feel. It has been redesigned especially in the rear quarter panels with the new LED tail lamp which enhances the new look.
