Yamaha Tightens Its Strength

YamahaYamaha itself has proved an 'Exclusive and Trusted' manufacturer of top quality motorcycles. Riding high on the success of four new launches across different categories, Yamaha Motors India has this year strengthened its foothold. Yamaha said it has approached its task of rebuilding the company in India in a very systematic and planned manner, focusing on quality, design, technology and innovation.

"The year 2008 has been a turnaround year for Yamaha. We have made efforts to replicate Yamaha's global brand image by launching two new models - YZF-R15 and FZ16. These models have received raving reviews from automotive experts and have helped us achieve higher sales as against last year," said Yukimine Tsuji, CEO and MD, India Yamaha Motor.

"The year 2009 is going to be a crucial one for Yamaha as we shift gears and move into a high growth trajectory. We are aware that these are challenging times for the industry as the economy passes through a slowdown. However, we are confident of grasping customers mind, attention and share of the wallet with our technologically superior products whose quality matches those produced in our factories in Europe, Japan & the US," Tsuji added.

Even as the automobile industry was slow down by negative growth, Yamaha sold 136,468 bikes in 2008 which is 13.3% more than last year. The company has received remarkable response to its new bikes - R15, FZ 16, Gladiator SS and RS, in their respective segments. In December 2008, Yamaha sold 16,000 units which is 190% more compared to December 2007.

Yamaha bikes have kept up their growth momentum despite the scarcity of auto loans and unwillingness of banks to extend loans to prospective buyers. Further, the company plans to infuse the synergies of branded showrooms into its existing dealer network in a phased manner both in terms of appeal and experience. Yamaha has five company-owned outlets in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Kolkata. Out of the total Yamaha bikes sold in the country, 15% are financed through Busan Auto Finance.

Ford to Introduce Automatic Car Parking Technology

Ford Motors may be working hard to stave off bankruptcy, but that hasn't stopped America's No.2 automaker from investing in new technologies. In mid-2009 it plans to introduce its version of a car parallel-parks itself in its new Lincoln MKT luxury crossover and the Lincoln MKS large sedan.

It expects the system to get a warmer reception than the first self-parking car, the widely mocked Lexus LS 460L luxury sedan. "This is technology that works and makes people's lives easier," said Mark Fields, president of Ford's North and South American operations. Fields calls it part of a "steady stream" of advanced new features Ford is introducing to rebuild the company's image as a technical leader.

"We're democratising technology," he said, citing Sync, which provides voice control of mobile phones and audio systems, and a system on the 2010 Ford Fusion midsize sedan that alerts drivers when a vehicle is in their blind spot.

Lexus introduced its self-parking system on the $63,675 LS 460 luxury sedan a couple of years ago. The system is part of a $6,345 option package on the 2009 LS 460. Ford won't reveal prices for Lincolns with the system yet, but Fields said the vehicles would cost far less than the big Lexus sedan.

Lexus' complicated park-assist system quickly became the butt of jokes because of its slow and inconsistent operation. Ford hopes to avoid that fate by using ultrasonic sensors rather than cameras to provide its system with more precise data for parking.

According to Ford, the technology is a "major leap forward in speed and ease of use compared with the camera-reliant systems offered by competitors" as the system requires less driver interface and reduces the risk of selecting a parking spot that is too tight, as well as having the ability to work in downhill parking situations.

Practically speaking, using the system itself is fairly simple - the driver activates the system by simply pressing an instrument panel button, which activates the ultrasonic sensors to measure and identify a feasible parallel parking space. The system then prompts the driver to accept the system assistance to park, at which point the steering system then takes over and steers the car into the parking space hands-free.

Like other systems, the driver still shifts the transmission and operates the gas and brake pedals while a visual and/or audible driver interface advises the driver about the proximity of other cars, objects and people and provides instructions until the park is complete. In the event of anything untoward, the driver can interrupt the system by grasping the steering wheel and using the brakes.

"With the touch of a button, Lincoln MKS and MKT drivers can parallel park quickly, easily and safely without ever touching the steering wheel," said Derrick Kuzak, Ford's group vice president of Global Product Development. "This is another example of exclusive Ford smart technology, such as Ford Sync, that makes the driving experience easier and more enjoyable for our customers."

The system is faster and more accurate than that in the Lexus, said Ali Jammoul, Ford's chief engineer for chassis engineering and steering systems. Ford calls it Active Park Assist. Once activated, the system measures parking spaces and alerts the driver when the car passes one the right size. With one touch, it then backs the car into the space, Jammoul said.

Ford said it spent about 18 months developing the system with supplier Valeo.
