Volkswagen & Audi set up new corporate sales office in Mumbai

Volkswagen Group, Europe’s largest automobile manufacturer is poised to further strengthen its Indian operations with the setting up of a new corporate sales office in Mumbai.

The new corporate sales office located at Bandra Kurla Complex will help Volkswagen and Audi in catering to its customers and dealers in India better.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Joerg Mueller, President and Managing Director Volkswagen Group India remarked, “Our Indian operations play a significant role in our overall strategy. To further strengthen the growth in India we will increase our Volkswagen and Audi dealerships across the country from 14 at present to approximately 150 by 2011. We look forward to a long-term relationship with the country.”

In 2007, Volkswagen had first introduced to the Indian market, its indigenously built Volkswagen Passat to cater to the premium automobile segment. This was followed by the recent successful launch of the Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen’s mid-sized premium car in India. Volkswagen dealerships are based in New Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chandigarh and Ludhiana.

Audi entered the Indian market in 2005. The Audi model range in India includes the Audi A8, Audi Q7, Audi A6, Audi A4 and Audi TT and is available at present in seven dealerships across the country: in New Delhi, Gurgaon, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune.

To further increase their footprints in the country Volkswagen offers its top models like the Phaeton and the Touareg as CBUs. Audi will introduce the super sports car Audi R8 to the Indian market in autumn 2008.

With this office Volkswagen Group Sales Private Limited crosses another milestone which firmly grounds it to India and displays its firm aspiration to capture the Indian automobile market.

Mitsubishi Motors new Pajero Sport SUV at 2008 Moscow Motor Show

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation will unveil the new Pajero Sport SUV at the Moscow Auto Salon 2008 (The Moscow Motor Show) to be held at the Crocus Expo in Moscow between August 26 and September 7 (opens to the public on August 29). Mitsubishi Motors will display a total of 15 models at the show.

Pajero Sport (for Russian market)
Features that distinguish Pajero Sport include a new tough and durable "ladder frame" that provides a platform for outstanding performance under the most stringent off-road conditions and Mitsubishi's highly acclaimed Super Select 4WD system, based on the company's All Wheel Control philosophy. Inside, Pajero Sport achieves class-topping quietness while the comprehensive cabin appointments and practical innovations provide a reassuring and comfortable interior space.

(1) Design: Pajero Sport's exterior design was developed around the idea of "Cool & Hot" proportions. Its elegant styling makes it look perfectly at home around about town (cool) while its high SUV stance suggests how capably Pajero Sport can deal with all-terrain conditions (hot). The new design melds together a distinctive off-roader silhouette and dynamic lines crafted to create a form that projects a sense of speed. Front over-fenders accentuate the surface-hugging fat tires and macho rear blister fenders add a dash of muscular tenacity, serving to make the body look wider and impart a reassuring sense of safety.

Inside, Pajero Sport stays true to the "Cool & Hot" concept. A functional and intuitive center panel is centrally located in the dashboard for a sporty and in an expansive structure that adds to a sense of roominess. The use of two-tone coloring tied to the door trim contributes to creating a coherent interior space distinguished by its clean, unbroken surfaces. Features that serve to enhance levels of functionality and quality appearance include the use of soft-touch seat upholstery and a combination of high-tech brightwork and elegant wood-grain inlays.

(2) Packaging : The new Pajero Sport moves one size up over its predecessor with an overall length of 4695 mm (compared with 4620 mm for the old model); overall width of 1815 mm (1775 mm); overall height of 1800 mm (1730 mm); and wheelbase of 2800 mm (2725 mm).

With an approach angle of 36% (against the Pajero Long model's 36.6%), departure angle of 25% (25%), ground clearance of 215 mm (225 mm) and ramp break over angle of 23% (22.5%), Pajero Sport boasts obstacle clearance angles, an indicator of a vehicle's off-road capability, and ride height on a par with the world-renowned off-road icon, the Pajero.

(3) Engine: Pajero Sport is powered by an intercooler-turbocharged 4M41-type 3.2-liter diesel unit using a vibration- and noise-reducing common rail direct injection system. The power unit produces maxima of 120 kW (163 PS) / 3500 rpm and 343 Nm (35.0 kg-m) / 2000 rpm.

Common rail fuel injection system : The common rail direct fuel injection system uses a tube that branches to supply ECU-controlled injector valves which each feed fuel into individual cylinders. The extremely high injection pressures used ensure very high combustion efficiency, thereby reducing NOx emissions and the noise and vibration typically associated with traditional diesel engines.

(4) Transmission and driveline : Pajero Sport comes with a 4-speed Sport Mode automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual gearbox. The model uses Mitsubishi Motors' All Wheel Control-inspired Super Select 4WD driveline, which enjoys high acclaim for its reliability and go-anywhere capability. The system feeds maximum drive torque to the wheels with the most grip, for competence on all road surfaces. Pajero Sport is available with an optional rear differential lock that eliminates the speed differential between the rear wheels to help the driver extract his vehicle when bogged down.

(5) Body : Pajero Sport's body sits on a new ladder-frame chassis that realizes very high levels of body strength and durability while the use of impact-energy absorbing deformation beads in the frontal frame sections and other safety-enhancing elements also improve crashworthiness. Bending and torsional rigidity in the new ladder-frame are 100% and 50% (respectively) higher than before, significantly reducing vibration transmitted to the body. The stiffer frame also improves vehicle's reliability in off-road use as well as improving handling and ride comfort when driving on tarmac.

(6) Suspension, wheels and tires : With a double-wishbone coil spring configuration at the front and a 3-link coil spring arrangement at the rear, Pajero Sport's suspension delivers well-mannered stability and handling characteristics when on tarmac together with maximum tire/surface contact when driving off-road. Pajero Sport is offered with a choice of two sizes of tire: 265/65R 17 (larger) or 265/70R 16.

(7) Brakes : 16-inch ventilated disc front brakes deliver sure-footed stopping power and accurate brake feel. The rear wheels use 11.6-inch leading trailing drum brakes.

(8) Utility and interior equipment : The front seatbacks recline fully to provide a flat surface together with the rear seats. The rear seats boast a generous 150 mm slide travel, allowing various configurations for occupant and luggage spaces: either maximum legroom, load carrying capacity or something in between.

Pajero Sport's soft seat upholstery is stain- and water-repellent. This plus its waterproof luggage space floor make it the ideal vehicle for outdoor leisure pursuits as well as for everyday use.

(9) Audio systems: Pajero Sport is available with an audio system that comprises a CD (MP3) player and AM/FM radio tuner, a 420 Watt amplifier and 8 speakers. The tweeters are mounted in specially designed doors enclosures and with punched metal mesh grilles deliver sound of outstanding clarity. Steering wheel-mounted controls allow the driver to operate his audio system without having to take his hand off the wheel.

MITSUBISHI Concept-RA
Illustrating the fact that fun-to-drive performance and environmental responsibility need not be mutually exclusive concepts, the MITSUBISHI Concept-RA's driveline features the S-AWC vehicle dynamics control system used in the Lancer Evolution*6 together with new Active Steering and Active Damper systems. These systems are integrally managed by the S-AWC system to realize vehicle behavior that faithfully reflects the driver's intent and inputs. MITSUBISHI Concept-RA also uses Mitsubishi Motors' Twin Clutch SST automated manual transmission and is powered by a new high-efficiency, low-emission 2.2-liter 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve clean diesel engine. With a VD/VG (Variable Diffuser / Variable Geometry) turbocharger producing optimum boost characteristics at all times, the power unit delivers a maximum output of 150 kW (204 PS) and maximum torque of 420 Nm (42.8 kg-m).

For compliance with Tier 2 Bin 5 emission regulations in the United States and Post-New Long Term Regulations in Japan, the clean power unit uses a new catalytic converter system that brings together diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), NOx trap catalyst (NTC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) technologies. The MITSUBISHI Concept-cX mates a high-output, high-efficiency 1.8-liter clean diesel engine to Mitsubishi Motors' Twin Clutch SST transmission to deliver the highest levels of driving and environmental performance. This compact SUV soft-roader concept offers superior levels of utility and practical performance, a driving position that enhances visibility, and the split tailgate already well received on the Outlander.
MITSUBISHI Concept-ZT
The Concept-ZT raises the bar both in terms of running and environmental performance. The sedan uses a high-output, fuel-efficient 2.2-liter clean diesel engine mated to Mitsubishi Motors' Twin Clutch SST (Sport Shift Transmission), and employs MMC's plant-based Green Plastic range of interior trim.

Concept-ZT features an array of advanced active safety technologies, including pre-crash safety and a lane-drift warning system, as well as technologies that actively support the driver in his operation of the vehicle including all-around multi-monitors and a parking assistance system. A pop-up hood also contributes to Concept-ZT's high level of crashworthiness.

Mahindra Renault launches the Logan in Nepal

Toyota Hybrid Tour arrives at Byward Market

Canadian drivers are looking for relief at the gas pumps and Toyota's fuel efficient, low-emission vehicles deliver just that.

To dispel common myths and give Canadian drivers first-hand experience, Toyota Canada Inc. and the Ontario Toyota Dealers Association are pleased to bring the Toyota Hybrid Tour to Ontario this August.

The tour features interactive information displays and current models of Toyota's hybrid vehicles (Prius, Highlander Hybrid and Camry Hybrid) and fuel-sipping gasoline models such as the Yaris and Canadian-built Corolla.

Visitors will learn about eco-friendly automotive technology work and can even attend fuel-efficiency clinics. Drivers will also be invited to test drive one of Toyota's many fuel-efficient vehicles.

Indians to get to own Volkswagen Beetle by 2009

Indians could get to own the original people’s car - the Volkswagen Beetle - by 2009. According to Volkswagen India President and Managing Director Joerg Muller, the Beetle is expected in India after Volkswagen strengthens its dealership network in the country.

Volkswagen BeetleIt is the company’s plan to use the Beetle as a brand building tool for itself as it attempts to move into the highly competitive Indian car segment by 2010. Currently, the company plans to ship the Beetle as a completely Built Unit (CBU) from Mexico.

Alternative plans include setting up a manufacturing plant in Chakan in Maharashtra at the cost of about 580 million Euros (approximately INR 3,600 crores) from where the company will roll out the Beetle.

Currently, the company is on a dealership expansion drive. It has eight dealers currently, and plans to increase to around 15 dealers. By 2011 the company plans to acquire around 120 dealers.

Mercedes Benz Roadster with new glossy finish

Mercedes Benz RoadsterSleek and elegant, a dream in black with brilliant red leather seats. This is the look Belgian classic car aficionado Andries Meuzelaar’s 300 SL Roadster will be sporting when it returns as king of the road in the near future. At the moment, the Mercedes Benz is still hidden away in Stuttgart, where the legendary model is getting a makeover. Even in its current state, however, with its paintwork sanded off, inner workings removed and body perched up on blocks, the supple curved body provides a glimpse of the vehicle’s grace and elegance. “It’s a real gem, a milestone in automotive history,” says Meuzelaar. It’s no wonder, then, that his standards for restoring the roadster are extremely high. “I trust Glasurit. My experience with Glasurit paints in the past has been excellent, and they are my obvious choice this time around, too.”

Brimming with anticipation:
The task of putting Meuzelaar’s 1960 Roadster back on the road has been assigned to restorer Johannes Kleissl. “Restoring these cars isn’t just my job, it’s also my passion,” says Kleissl, owner of the HK-Engineering restoration company, which deals exclusively with Mercedes Benz 300 SL models. The company has four locations in Germany and an international service network, making it one of the world’s largest restoration companies. Meuzelaar’s Mercedes will soon be wearing a new coat of Glasurit paints, and Kleissl thinks that’s great. “We want only the top of the line for this legendary car.” The fact that the 300 SL is more than a mere set of wheels for Meuzelaar goes without saying: “I can’t wait to see and experience my car in all its glory – I’m as excited as a little kid!”
Paint competence “made in Münster”:
The 300 SL is not the first Mercedes Benz “Sport Light” to be revitalized with a coat of Glasurit brand paint. This past April, the U.S. hit series “Dream Car Garage”, which is currently restoring a 300 SL coupe, was on location at sites including Glasurit in Münster-Hiltrup. In order to match the original as closely as possible, the “Dream Car Garage” crew is using waterborne Glasurit 90 Line paints to refinish the car in its original color. The Glasurit COLOR-PROFI System is making a major contribution to the restoration. The world’s largest color archive has 200,000 color chips with original paint, documenting the color history of an entire century. Meuzelaar himself is no stranger to Glasurit. Two years ago, experts at Glasurit supported him in the search for the original color of his Horch 853 classic sports convertible. After meticulous research and a number of test mixtures, the Glasurit paint experts finally came up with the original color, which they identified using pictures from the old Horch brochure.

The Roadster was manufactured until 1963. It had six cylinders and a nearly 3,000-cubic centimeter, 215-horsepower motor and could reach maximum speeds of 250 kilometers per hour.

Ford begins production of all-new Fiesta

Volume production of the new Ford Fiesta, the first of a generation of new global small Ford cars, started at the company's Cologne plant in Germany.

This all-new model of the Ford Fiesta has been conceived and developed by the European arm of Ford's global product development team to meet the demands and expectations of customers around the world.

It is also the blueprint for future Ford global product development, bringing together Europe, the Americas and Asia. The new Fiesta will be tailored for each region and go on sale progressively between now and 2010, starting now with Europe.
Ford Fiesta
The Cologne plant has the honour of being the first Ford assembly facility in the world to build the new car. In January 2009, the Valencia plant in Spain will also begin to manufacture the new Fiesta. The production facilities for new Fiesta outside of Europe will be Nanjing in China, Rayong in Thailand and Cuautitlàn in Mexico. They will begin to produce the car for their respective regions from late 2008 through early 2010.

In a video message to Ford of Europe employees at today's ceremony in Cologne, Ford Motor Company President and CEO, Alan Mulally, said: "Today we are celebrating the start of a new era for our fabulous Ford Motor Company. The first product of our Global Product Development System, the all-new Fiesta is an outstanding symbol for our One Ford vision of a single, global company designing and building cars for customers around the world. Be proud of what you have achieved and be proud of your contribution to a model that will get the world talking."

A total of 455 million Euros was invested in the restructuring and modernisation of the Cologne plant for the new Fiesta.

The all-new Fiesta is manufactured with sophisticated techniques more commonly found in the production of large cars: Ford production experts introduced these features at the highly efficient Cologne Assembly Plant, without interfering with existing Fiesta production. The all-new Fiesta production team went into the plant on weekends to install and verify new systems on the existing line. Some of the 50,000 hours of operator training was done off-line on static cars, while some training was dynamic (on-line). In one example of the training undertaken over a six week period, the production team built the same car on the line every day, then stripped it down and built it again.

In 2008, Ford plans to manufacture 148,000 new Fiestas in Cologne. When operating at full capacity, a total of more than 1,900 cars every day - new Fiestas together with the Ford Fusion - will be manufactured in Cologne over three shifts.

"The Ford Fiesta is very special to us in Ford of Europe and to our customers," said John Fleming, President and CEO, Ford of Europe. "Over the past 32 years it has consistently been at the top of the list of Europe's best-selling cars.

"Its dynamic, bold design and high manufacturing quality will attract a new generation of Fiesta owners and appeal to existing customers. I am confident that the all-new Fiesta will build on the success of its predecessor," he added.

Since the very first Fiesta was launched in 1976, over 12 million have been sold, with over 400,000 customers in 2007 proving the enduring popularity of the model.

The new Fiesta's dramatic exterior design and exciting interior styling are instantly recognisable, accentuated by the bold use of colours and the use of high quality materials throughout. The new vehicle extends the core Fiesta values of style, efficiency and driving quality.

External industry organisations regard the Fiesta plant in Cologne as the most efficient vehicle assembly plant in Europe. A total of 410,900 Fiestas and Fusions was manufactured in Cologne in 2007. Approximately 85 per cent of the vehicles produced in Cologne last year were exported to more than fifty countries. The Cologne assembly plant employs directly some 4,000 people.

Earlier this year, Ford began sourcing renewable electricity to cover the full electric power demand of its Fiesta manufacturing and engineering facilities in Cologne. Through this initiative, the company will reduce its CO2 emissions by 190.000 tonnes per year. This initiative is part of the company's overall commitment to further reduce the environmental footprint of its vehicles through their entire life cycle.

"We're very proud of the Cologne Assembly Plant and the vehicles produced here. Not only does the new Fiesta bring innovative design and engineering to the small car market, but it brings new manufacturing technologies as well", said Jim Tetreault, Vice-President Manufacturing, Ford of Europe.

"This new Fiesta is tough, strong, and safe due to the body construction technologies which allow us to build a lightweight, yet extremely strong body through the innovated use of high strength steel. It is also built with care, craftsmanship and precision by an efficient and dedicated workforce, which is second to none", he added.

Chevrolet Captiva for Comrades Charity Competition winner

General Motors South Africa (GMSA) Vice president of Sales and Marketing Malcolm Gauld recently handed over a brand new Captiva LTZ to the 2008 Comrades Marathon Amabeadibeadi competition winner Frans Mouton. Frans, whose wife Christa is a proud owner of a Chevrolet Aveo was delighted about winning the Captiva.

“This is the first time I’ve won anything and I was so surprised and excited I couldn’t wait to get into the car” said a beaming Frans. Frans who is an engineer at the City of Tswane’s Water Supply division entered the competition after buying his wife beads at the Comrades Marathon Expo as a lucky charm for her 9th Comrades marathon.

The beads which are sold through the Comrades Marathon Amabeadibeadi charity initiative are made by a group of women in Pietermaritzburg. “The Amabeadibeadi project is a way for Comrades to show social responsibility to South Africa by encouraging charities to apply and join the group for a three year term” says convener of the Comrades charities Bobby Maharaj.

Proceeds from the sms competition and the Amabeadibeadi initiative were donated to the five official charities, associated with the 2008 Comrades Marathon Charity initiative. The charities that benefited were: the Starfish Foundation (Aids orphans); Wildlands Conservation Trust (Fauna and Flora); Sports Trust (Sports Development); Heart & Stroke Foundation (Health); Community Chests of Durban and Pietermaritzburg (Community welfare).

Bobby is proud of his organisation’s relationship with General Motors South Africa and believes that having the Chevrolet Captiva as a prize contributed to the success of their fund raising initiative. “Having a vehicle as a prize was always going to be a great draw card but having this vehicle in particular has been unbelievable because the thought of winning such a luxury vehicle is what encouraged people to enter” said Bobby.

Toyota to bring its hybrid sedan to India

Toyota Motors has an answer to growing emission concerns and rising fuel costs in the form of its hybrid sedan Prius, which it plans to bring to India shortly.

The Toyota Prius is sold in nearly 40 countries around the globe, and it is regarded as being the most fuel efficient midsize car in the United States. Additionally, it is declared as the third least carbon emitting vehicle in Britain.

The Toyota Prius runs both on electricity and fuel. In the long run, the car rewards its owner with lower maintenance costs and greater fuel efficiency.

Porsche extends range of mid-engined sports cars

Porsche 1Introducing two new models, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, are rounding off their range of dynamic mid-engined sports cars at the top. The two new models, the Porsche Boxster S Porsche Design Edition 2 and the Cayman S Sport, develop 303 bhp (223 kW) from 3.4 litres, eight horsepower more than the respective S models.

Both new models come with a wide range of exclusive equipment highlighted by the particularly striking design of the car and will be available at the dealership as of early September.

With the Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 and the Boxster RS 60 Spyder special series now completely sold out, Porsche are entering the market with new special models based on the prize-winning Boxster S and Cayman S. Only a few weeks ago, Porsche's roadster model won first prize in the readers' choice of the German motor magazine "sport auto" in its class of the most sporting convertibles up to Euro 80,000. And in a representative customer enquiry by US market research institute J.D. Power, the Porsche Boxster also came first in its category as the best model.

The Boxster S Porsche Design Edition 2 now sets new standards, the production colour Carrara White, for a long time one of the highlights in Porsche's colour range, now receiving additional emphasis in the new Boxster: The star-spoke rims on the 19-inch SportDesign wheels featured as standard, the side air intakes, the centre console and the dials on the three round instruments are also finished in white. Sporting grey stripes extending lengthwise along the body accentuate the brilliant white finish of the car in the same sophisticated style as the red rear lights.

Bi-xenon headlights, the Sports Chrono Package and sports seats all coming as standard enhance the particularly sporting appearance of the car in genuine GT3 look, further enhanced by the sports exhaust system together with a twin-chamber exhaust tailpipe and alcantara finish on the gearshift lever, the handbrake, and the rim of the GT3 steering wheel.

Audi A6: An overachiever with new strengths

Audi A6A winner always builds on his strengths: That’s why Audi has again upgraded its luxury class A6 model. Efficient engines have been added to the drive-train lineup, with innovative technologies cutting fuel consumption by about 15 percent across the whole model range. An improved suspension and new high-tech assistance system give the driver even greater control over the car. And the new-generation MMI control system is out-performing itself. The revamped A6 will be launched in the German market in late summer.

It’s the sportiest and most popular business sedan on the market. The Audi A6 is leading the Premium C pack – both in Europe and around the world. In 2007, Audi sold about 234,000 units, giving the A6 a 37 percent market share among its core competitors. Most of the A6’s sold were equipped with six- or eight-cylinder engines, permanent 4x4 quattro and a luxury assortment of optional equipment – all evidence of the high regard Audi technologies is enjoying worldwide.

Its design is emphasized by a range of bold new accents, perfectly articulating the A6’s strong personality. The single-frame grill, bumpers, air vents and fog lights have all gotten a facelift.

The optionally-available xenon plus, LED daytime running lights have been redesigned as horizontal strips with 6 LEDs each. Other options include Audi adaptive light, a dynamic cornering light system, and the high-beam assistant that automatically switches between the high and low beam.

An aluminum-colored molding traversing the sides emphasizes the A6’s dynamic contour. At 4.93 meters (16.17 ft) long, 1.86 meters (6.10 ft) wide, and 1.46 meters (4.79 ft) high, little has changed in the sedan’s generous proportions. The gentle lip on the trunk, integrated chrome strip on the bumper, broad diffuser and straight exhaust pipes are part and partial of the revamped rear end. The bipartite rear lights with LED technology have also gotten a new look: narrow and wide, they taper inward on the sedan. And there are 13 exterior colors to choose from, including five new ones.

The A6’s spacious interior with its clean and elegant contours and perfect craftsmanship is characteristic of this luxury brand. The rear seats are extremely comfortable and the L-shaped headrests improve the driver’s rear view visibility. As an option, the back seats can be fitted with a comfortable 2-seater bench. A package of elaborate features makes sure the noise level is cut by almost half, particularly within critical frequency ranges.

The instrument panel uses new higher-resolution graphics; and a new frame better accentuates the display (color in the optional MMI navigation system). Tastefully-appointed chrome trim, even on the spokes of the steering wheel, call attention to its overall elegance and inlays are available in either aluminum look or fine woods.

As is expected of an Audi, the interior designers have made sure all the colors and materials match. Standard seats can be optionally upholstered with a new material; the sport seats are available in Valcona leather. Soft armrests on the doors increase comfort, while the integrated headrest system reduces the danger of whiplash.

Audi is now offering an S-line sports package for the most dynamic of drivers. The package includes enhanced performance features like 18-inch wheels and sports suspension that lowers the ride height by 30 millimeters (1.18 in). Its sporty seats, decorative inlays and upholstery give the black-trimmed interior a feeling of even more exclusivity and the S-line exterior package provides more drama. Features from this Audi exclusive program are tailor-made to fit the A6’s luxury-seeking mavericks.

One of the major strengths of the A6 lies in its broad selection of engines: six gas and four diesels use direct fuel injection and cutting-edge FSI, TFSI and TDI technologies in a choice of four, six or eight cylinders. Whether stick shift, convenient tiptronic or high-efficiency multitronic, the energy literally flows to the front wheels, or all four wheels for that matter. Its engines are both powerful and efficient. New measures have been introduced to optimize engines and minimize fuel consumption without sacrificing one ounce of driving pleasure. Fuel consumption over the whole A6 family has been lowered by about 15 percent.

The smallest gas engine is the 2.0 TFSI, a 125 kW (170 hp) turbocharged four-cylinder unit. On the other end of the spectrum is the 4.2 FSI, a 257 kW (350 hp) V8 engine. Audi V6 models can be equipped with one of its two new 2.8 liter FSI engines; the 140 kW (190 hp) or the 162 kW (220 hp). Both engines feature the innovative Audi Valvelift System (AVS), which manages the inlet valve timing so that there is more torque and less fuel consumption. Regardless of which 2.8 FSI engine the A6 sedan is fitted, average fuel consumption is only 8.2 liters per 100 kilometers (28.68 US mpg) for the 190 hp, 6-speed manual shift or 8.4 liters per 100 kilometers (28.00 US mpg) for the 220 hp multitronic CVT.

With its 3-liter displacement and 213 kW (290 hp) power output, the V6 is a particularly exciting newcomer. Audi has designed the perfect package for each one of its engine. That’s why the 3.0 TFSI is fitted with a supercharger. From now on “T” doesn’t just stand for turbocharged – it stands for supercharged. Supercharger technology does not mean increased consumption – but the short intake paths do mean instantaneous response. And it’s got full power build-up even at low engine speeds: from 2500 1/min to 4850 1/min, the torque curve is broad and flat at 420 Nm (309.78 lb-ft).

The 3.0 TFSI comes with tiptronic and quattro drive train. The A6 sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.9 seconds and keeps on going as it presses to its electronically-regulated maximum speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph). This is the kind of performance that only an eight-cylinder engine would have been able to deliver a few years ago. At 9.5 liters per 100 kilometers (24.76 US mpg) on the EU cycle, the supercharged V6 is amazingly economical. The 3.0 TFSI’s combination of dynamic performance and low consumption is one more example of Audi’s successful efficiency strategy.

The A6 TDI engines give further evidence of just how closely Audi has been able to align sporty performance and efficiency. Fuel is delivered by the extremely sophisticated and quiet system of common rails with rapid-action piezo injectors and an injection pressure of 1800 bar (26,106.79 psi). The two V6 TDI engines (2.7 TDI with 140 kW (190 hp) and 3.0 TDI with 176 kW (240 hp) have peak torques of 380 Nm (280.27 lb-ft) and 450 Nm (331.90 lb-ft), respectively.

The key to achieving such exemplary values is the strategic deployment of innovative technologies. The power steering pump operates on demand; the alternator regenerates electrical energy when coasting thereby reducing load off the engine. By lowering the ride height by 20 millimeters (0.79 in) and other aerodynamic fine-tuning, the drag coefficient has been reduced to cD = 0.28.

Audi quattro four-wheel drive is available on all engines with 140 kW (190 hp) or above and is standard equipment on high-end aggregates. The manual shift, 140 kW (190 hp) 2.8 FSI notwithstanding, this is the very latest generation quattro with the newly emphasized rear-end design. It gives the A6 tremendous driving characteristics, remarkable grip and superior safety. Under normal conditions, the torque split is 40 percent to the front wheels and 60 percent to the rear.

In fine-tuning the A6, two key objectives were identified – increasing its comfort while retaining its sporty character. With new large-diameter, front-axle shock absorbers operating within an optimized valve system, Audi engineers were able to achieve both goals. Every other aspect of the suspension set-up has been improved, including the automotive spring response.

Audi has integrated several new high-tech assistance systems. The new Audi side assist kicks in to help drivers when changing lanes at speeds over 30 km/h (18.64 mph), ensuring a stress-free and superior drive. Using radar sensors, Audi Side Assist is able to detect other cars up to 50 meters (164.04 ft) away: a signal on the outside mirror lights up should changing lanes pose a threat. Audi lane assist helps keep drivers in their own lane, radar-assisted adaptive cruise control keeps a steady distance to the vehicle ahead, and Audi parking system advanced has a rearview camera.

Winstorm MAXX takes on Honda CR-V

The test-drive, which was held for journalists at a race track in Yongin, Kyunggi province, included a slalom course, circular driving course and panic braking course to measure driving performance and driving stability.Ride and handling are crucial vehicle attributes for most SUV owners.

“We carried out this comparison because of our full confidence in the Winstorm MAXX’s quality and its outstanding drivability,” said Jeenshik Kim, RV brand manager of GM Daewoo. “With its powerful performance, the Winstorm MAXX can take on any competition, including imports.”

Subaru Canada introduces 2009 Impreza WRX

Subaru Canada, Inc (SCI) introduced the 2009 Impreza WRX-now with a choice of two trim levels. Fans of rally-style performance can now choose between an entry level Impreza WRX and the new high-performance WRX265 with a more powerful turbo engine and a host of features engineered to enhance the performance driving experience. The 2009 Impreza lineup arrives in Canadian dealerships in September.

Both Impreza WRX models are available in 4- and 5-door configurations, but the new WRX265 is an even more athletic driving machine with features that include:

- A potent turbocharged and intercooled engine that produces 265 horsepower and 244 lb-ft of torque.
- A new power tilting and sliding glass moonroof.
- Performance-tuned suspension.
- 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with Dunlop SP SPORT summer performance tires.
- Premium audio system, including Sirius Satellite Radio and a 3-month trial subscription.
- Tilting/telescoping steering wheel with integrated audio and cruise control switches.

Every Impreza WRX is extremely well equipped with features that enhance its performance personality. These include air conditioning with automatic climate control and air filtration; tilting and telescoping steering wheel with integrated cruise control; heated, rally-type front seats; 17-inch alloy wheels; multi-reflector halogen fog lights; power-adjustable, folding, heated side mirrors; engine immobilizer and anti-theft security system; disc brakes at all four corners (ventilated in front, solid in rear); and Subaru's Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) and Traction Control systems.

Standard sound system on the WRX is a 4-speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA stereo with Radio Data System, vehicle speed sensitive volume and auxiliary audio input jack. The WRX265 is further enhanced with a premium audio system with four upgraded speakers, two tweeters, and SRS CS-Auto audio enhancement.

Powered for Performance
The 2009 Impreza WRX is powered by Subaru's 2.5-litre DOHC, 16-valve, 4-cylinder Subaru BOXER that's turbocharged and intercooled to produce 224 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 226 lb-ft of torque at just 2,800 rpm. This engine has twice been named International Engine of the Year in the 2.0-litre to 2.5-litre category, most recently in 2008.

The new WRX265 is equipped with a 2.5-litre DOHC, 16-valve, 4-cylinder Subaru BOXER with a high-pressure turbocharger and intercooler. This engine develops 265 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 244 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm.

Both of these muscular powerplants are harnessed to a slick-shifting 5-speed manual transmission. For 2009, no automatic transmission is offered on Impreza WRX models.

Designed for Versatility as well as Performance
The Impreza chassis is designed to be both rigid and comfortable with high-tension steel at key structural points. The design helps keep weight down, while the 2,620 mm (103.2 inch) wheelbase allows for crisp handling and a roomy interior, and helps protect occupants from noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH).

Impreza's double-wishbone rear suspension provides a refined ride and a quiet cabin. At the same time, its compact layout creates minimal intrusion into the cargo area for a deep and wide luggage compartment. On 5-door models, the wide and flat load floor can accommodate two golf bags with the rear seats in the upright position.

In the WRX sedan, which is 165 mm (6.5 inches) longer than the 5-door model, the extra space provides for a larger, deeper trunk that will take three golf bags. On all Impreza models, the 60/40 split-folding rear seat boosts cargo capacity and convenience even further.

User-Friendly Technology
Both the standard and optional audio systems feature the Radio Data System, which can display a variety of information, including song titles and artists. The WRX265 has SIRIUS Satellite Radio already installed and comes with a 3-month trial subscription.

Outstanding Levels of Safety
Impreza is built using the advanced Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame body structure with front and rear crumple zones. All 2009 WRX models also have a 4-wheel/4-channel/4-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. There are 3-point seatbelts for all seats (height-adjustable for outboard positions), active front seat head restraints, and front seatbelts with electrically triggered pre-tensioners and load limiters.

Every 2009 Impreza is equipped with standard side-curtain airbags and front seat-mounted side airbags. The dual-stage Subaru Advanced Frontal Airbag System (SRS) provides a driver's side front airbag that deploys according to the vehicle's rate of deceleration. The system uses highly sensitive g-load sensors and computer algorithms to measure the unique levels of protection required in a collison.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
The foundation of every Subaru is the Symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Driving System. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is a system that includes Subaru's BOXER engine and a full-time power distribution system with a low centre of gravity for exceptional handling precision.

The WRX and WRX265 are equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission and use a viscous-coupling locking centre differential that splits power 50/50, front and rear, all the time.

Innovative power – the Golf democratizes progress:
The clear and powerful design of the new Golf is showing the entire brand the way to the future. Its acoustic properties and the overall comfort of the Volkswagen tear down class distinctions. Innovative engines and transmission technologies lower fuel consumption by up to 28 percent. All gasoline and diesel engines satisfy limits of the future EU-5 standard.

Assistance systems such as "automatic distance control" (ACC), "adaptive chassis control" (DCC) and the "park steering assistant" bring additional top technologies on board the Golf. A new ESP system, with finer response over its control range, further optimized crash properties, seven airbags including knee airbag, the special head restraints (WOKS) that counteract whiplash trauma, a "seatbelt detection" feature debuting in the rear seating area of the Golf and daytime running lights – that are standard equipment – provide for a maximum level of safety.

Exterior design – Precision in a new form:
The high value of the new Golf is reflected par excellence in its stylish design; all key body elements were redesigned: "We have cast the Golf’s core components in a precise, new mold", explains Walter de Silva. And the Italian design chief of the German corporation emphasizes this: "The Golf is the global icon car making. So the architecture and graphic form of new model are also absolutely clear and unique." At the same time, the sixth Golf has a sportier and more distinctive appearance than any previous generation of the model series. De Silva: "It is more accentuated, more three-dimensional than its predecessor; with precisely defined lines and edges, and with finely proportioned flared surfaces and recesses." And Klaus Bischoff, Chief Designer for the Volkswagen brand, adds: "Every detail is uncompromisingly aimed at improving value."

Especially in a direct comparison of generations five and six, it becomes clear just how much the new Golf has changed. The team headed up by de Silva and Bischoff sought to crystallize out the "essential DNA" of the model series and send it on a trip to the future. These stylistic characteristics include the clear front end of the first generation and the C-pillar that was perfected in the fourth generation.

The roof section now rests – similar to the new Scirocco – on a dominant filled out shoulder section. Responsible for this is a prominent curving line that – like a muscle trained down to the last fiber – extends from the headlights back to the taillights. In its side profile, this line – which Volkswagen Design calls the "character line" – also gives the new Golf a fuller, lower stance on the road from a side perspective.

All body surfaces are generally more relaxed, more athletic. In front the new car takes up the horizontally aligned radiator grille trim strip between the headlights of the first Golf generation; the grille itself is high-gloss black. The lines of the bumper match those of the radiator grille. Beneath this is an adjacent section with another air scoop. Also arranged on a black background are the chrome light housings of the dynamically styled headlamps.

In the rear too is characterized by a dominance of horizontal lines. The taillights – very wide now – are identified among other things by an unmistakably unique night design. Stylistically – with their crystal-clear lines for the turn signal and backup lamps – they bear a resemblance to the taillights of the Touareg. Overall, the image of the new Golf – in the interplay of all of its design characteristics – is one of a significantly wider, flatter and even more high-end car.

Interior – imploding class distinctions:
The car’s exceptional value also applies to the newly designed interior, whose refined surfaces and features completely transform class distinctions, both to the touch and visually, especially in the cockpit area. The appearance and layout of materials and details such as brushed chrome accents and round instruments derived directly from those of the Passat CC leave the impression that one is actually sitting in a car of the next higher segment. Ergonomic properties of the car’s interior were also further developed. For example, all operating controls are even easier to use. They include the control of the automatic climate control system (Climatronic) – presented for the first time on the Passat CC – and the power window controls that are now located further forward in the door trim, making them easier to access.

There is a common thread here: Volkswagen’s typical attention to perfection of every detail in the car. Take the example of "seatbelt detection" in the rear: if the Golf is ordered with rear side airbags, the user can recognize on the multifunctional display in the cockpit whether the occupants have their seatbelts fastened in the rear – separately for each seat. Or take the example of leather seats: a new, more robust leather surface is being used. Or the example of the cargo area: four practical hooks ensure that after shopping, the contents of shopping bags are not strewn across the cargo area. Or the example of the outside mirrors: thanks to an aerodynamically optimized shape they get significantly less dirty. They are easier to adjust from the interior, since the power mirror adjustment control is now located further up and more forward in the door trim.

Noise reduction – the quietest Golf since the first model:
The new Golf is characterized by first-class acoustic properties. A special damping film in the windshield also reduces driving noises, as does the newly developed seal concept for the doors and side window guides. The new shape of the outside mirrors also significantly reduces wind noise. Furthermore, special modifications were made to acoustically isolate the engine and passenger compartments from one another better. Very quiet rolling tires and new engine bearings round out the noise reduction package.

Diesel engines – migration to common rail injection:
Making a significant contribution to the pioneering acoustic properties are the exceptionally quiet TDI common rail engines being used in the Golf for the first time. Two balancer shafts also put an end to undesirable vibrations. Plans call for a TDI power range extending from 66 kW / 90 PS to 125 kW / 170 PS. Right at the market launch, Volkswagen will be offering the Golf with two 2.0 liter TDI engines; they output 81 kW / 110 PS and 103 kW / 140 PS. Always there as production equipment: a diesel particulate filter (DPF).

The new TDIs are exceptionally fuel efficient. The 110 PS strong entry-level diesel is satisfied with 4.5 liters of fuel (119 g/km CO2) per 100 kilometers – that represents a 0.6 liter reduction! Even the 140 PS version only requires 4.9 liters of diesel (129 g/km CO2), which is 0.6 liters less.

Gasoline engines – more economical than ever before:
Four variants will define the range of gasoline engines in the launch phase: 59 kW / 80 PS, 75 kW / 102 PS, 90 kW / 122 PS and 118 kW / 160 PS. Starting at 90 kW / 122 PS, the TSI engines come with supercharger and/or turbocharger. The fact is that the gasoline engines too are pioneering when it comes to fuel economy. The optimized 80 PS entry-level engine consumes just 6.4 liters of Super per hundred kilometers (149 g/km CO2) – that is 0.5 liters less than the previous model. The other TSI engines are also taking the stage as prime examples of efficiency: at 122 PS the new Golf 1.4 TSI consumes just 6.2 liters of Super (144 g/km CO2); this yields a fuel consumption advantage of 0.1 liters. Even the new 160 PS top version of the 1.4 TSI attains an excellent value at 6.3 liters. Compared to the retired 150 PS FSI, the 160 PS TSI’s fuel consumption was even lowered by 1.6 liters.

DSG – replaces conventional automatic:
With the exception of the entry-level versions, all gasoline and diesel engines can be paired with Volkswagen’s dual clutch transmission (DSG). Depending on the engine torque, either a 6-s0eed or 7-speed DSG is used. On the Golf, the extremely efficient and agile DSG has thereby replaced the classic torque converter automatic. Just how efficient the alliance of TSI plus DSG can be is demonstrated by the average fuel consumption of the 1.4 TSI with 160 PS and 7-speed DSG: 6.0 liters (139 g/km CO2). This high-tech duo replaces the 2.0 FSI with 150 PS and 6-speed automatic. Average fuel consumption there: 8.3 liters. Savings: 2.3 liters per hundred kilometers or 28 percent – progress in its best form.

Chery hybrid vehicles to debut at Beijing Olympics

As a part of the transportation arrangements for the Beijing Olympics, a 50-unit fleet of hybrid vehicles co-developed with Ricardo is being provided by Chery Automobile Company Ltd. Known as the "Olympics Green Messengers", these vehicles are some of China's first hybrid vehicles and will go into full production in the months following the games.

With its expertise in hybrid electric vehicles and its wide-ranging skills in systems integration and vehicle control and electronics, Ricardo was a natural choice of engineering partner for Chery when the Chinese automaker decided to develop its first hybrid products. Two new vehicles, both based on its existing A5 sedan model, were identified by Chery.

The first is a stop-start hybrid based on a 12-volt Belt Starter-Generator (BSG) linked to 1.6 litre gasoline engine, itself linked to a 5-speed manual transmission. The second is a more comprehensive mild-hybrid based on the same baseline vehicle but instead equipped with a 1.3 litre gasoline engine and a 12 kW crankshaft-mounted 151-volt Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG). These technologies have been configured to be capable of providing significant fuel savings through the use of advanced powertrain control and energy management strategies.

In addition to developing these two new hybrid products, an important objective of the programme for Chery was technology transfer through integration of the joint programmes with its own engineering processes. For this reason a dedicated on-site engineering office was established at the Ricardo Cambridge Technical Centre. Here, Chery engineers were able to work alongside colleagues from Ricardo as well as with selected component and sub-system suppliers, and could undertake key aspects of the project.

Key Ricardo responsibilities for the BSG programme included full architecture, sub-system and components requirements definition, hybrid control unit design, vehicle and communications interface development, system design - including detailed thermal analysis - and powertrain control strategy for safety and efficient operation. The focus of the engineering programme and the efficiency of the development programme were such that the first prototype vehicle was run with production-intent hardware and complete with hybrid strategy and application software, just ten months from programme start. The final fuel economy results are no less impressive: in tests over the ECE Urban drive cycle, the BSG vehicle achieves approximately a 7 per cent improvement in fuel consumption over the baseline product, and it is expected that the improvement will be greater than 10 per cent in real-world urban driving.

For the more complex ISG product, Ricardo carried full system design authority including specification and integration of the ISG system, high-voltage battery pack and battery management system, and developed an integrated hybrid control unit that incorporates the motor drive power electronics, DC to DC converter, and hybrid supervisory and safety functions into one compact package. The safety-critical application strategies and software were defined, engineered and validated including extensive vehicle and hardware-in-the-loop testing. With its comprehensive mild-hybrid functionality, the ISG-equipped sedan provides a significant increase in performance over the equivalent baseline A5 vehicle fitted with a 1.3 litre engine; peak power and torque of the ISG-equipped vehicle are comparable with that of a larger 1.6 litre engine. Final production calibration and testing of the vehicle systems are still taking place, but the fuel consumption improvement over the NEDC cycle is expected to approach 15 per cent compared to the 1.6 litre benchmark vehicle. In addition, the system enables engine restart within 200 milliseconds, thus allowing stop-start functionality to be included in the hybrid control strategy.

The new BSG and ISG powertrain equipped A5 models of Chery Automobile Co. Ltd underscore the position of this fast-growing Chinese automaker as one of China's automotive technology leaders. Engineered to exacting European emissions requirements, these new vehicles are due to enter full production shortly and will be available for both domestic Chinese and export markets.

2009 Acura MDX pricing announced

Acura announced pricing for the 2009 MDX luxury SUV, which is now on-sale at Acura dealerships nationwide.

For 2009, the MDX's power rear tailgate feature is standard equipment with the Technology and Sport packages - previously the power rear tailgate was only available on the Entertainment Package. Additionally, the AcuraLink real-time traffic system includes an additional metropolitan market (Dayton, Ohio) and the MDX is offered in two new exterior colors- Bali Blue Pearl and Mocha Metallic.

2009 Acura MDXManufacturer's suggested retail pricing for the 2009 MDX is: MDX, $40,790; MDX with Technology Package, $44,840; MDX with Technology Package and Entertainment Package, $46,590; MDX with Sport Package, $46,940; and MDX with Sport and Entertainment Packages, $48,690. Although the MDX includes improved features, pricing for the 2009 model represents a modest 1.43 percent sales weighted average price increase. Destination and Handling is not included in MSRP, and for the 2009 MDX remains unchanged at $760.

"Already considered a benchmark in the performance luxury SUV category, the MDX improves for 2009," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of sales. "We expect the 2009 MDX to continue as one of Acura's best selling models."

For 2009, the generously appointed 7-passenger MDX retains its confidence inspiring Nürburgring-tuned suspension, Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) and a robust 3.7-liter VTEC V-6 engine that delivers a stout 300 horsepower. Generous standard appointments include leather interior trim, power moonroof, HID headlights, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, Maintenance Minder system, and an Acura Premium Sound System that includes XM Radio and AUX jack connectivity.

The MDX's Technology Package includes a wide array of features such as the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition and rearview camera; AcuraLink Satellite Communication System; Interface dial; AcuraLink real-time traffic that now features 77 major metropolitan markets; a 410-watt, 10-speaker Acura/ELS Premium Sound System with multi-format 6-disc DVD-Audio changer; a GPS-linked, solar-sensing, dual-zone automatic climate control system with air filtration and humidity control; and a power operated rear tailgate.

The available Sport Package adds several features on top of the Technology package including the exclusive Active Damper System, which provides both Sport and Comfort settings to handle varying road conditions. The Sport Package also adds luxurious perforated Milano premium leather, an exclusive alloy wheel design, unique interior trim and auto-leveling HID headlights.

The Entertainment Package can be added to either the Technology or Sport Packages and includes the Acura DVD Rear Entertainment System, heated second row seats (for outboard positions) and a 115-volt power outlet.

Ford launches 2009 Edge with Blind Spot Mirror

Ford is moving quickly to address driver demands for increased visibility with an industry-first innovation, the Blind Spot Mirror, pulling ahead the feature's introduction by one year to launch this fall as standard equipment on the 2009 Ford Edge.

"The Blind Spot Mirror is the latest example of our strategy to move fast and to be industry leaders in enhancing the ownership experience."

Ford's Blind Sport Mirror answers customers' demands for better visibility as they change lanes or Parallel Park. This affordable technology will debut on the 2009 Edge later this year and eventually will be offered on several future Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles as standard equipment.

Blind Spot Mirror:
The Blind Spot Mirror is a traditional side view mirror designed with a secondary convex spotter in the top outer corner, which provides a view of the driver's blind spot. When traffic enters the driver's blind spot on either side of the vehicle, it is visible in the secondary convex mirror, alerting the driver of potential danger.

Ford's push to develop the Blind Spot Mirror and migrate it across its lineup comes as a result of careful customer research, said Kelly Kohlstrand with Ford's Advanced Product Marketing and Technology Planning team.

"We're committed to offering new features that address unmet customer needs," Kohlstrand said. "Customers told us that visibility is important to them and that they specifically desired a more effective outside rearview mirror."

Early drive clinics conducted by Ford show that the Blind Spot Mirror is a feature that customers want and value. Nearly 76 percent of focus group clinic participants said the mirror improved their confidence while driving. In addition, the participants said the learning curve or adjustment to the using the Blind Spot Mirror was minimal.

Ford's Blind Spot Mirror provides a more seamless solution than present aftermarket offerings, as it uses one continuous glass surface and is robust to the elements. The factory-installed spotter mirror is specifically designed for the vehicle - car or truck - it provides an optimized field of view.

New 2009 Lincoln MKS achieves strong early sales

Early sales are strong for the new 2009 Lincoln MKS. In its first full month on the market, the vehicle outsold the Acura RL, Infiniti M35 and Cadillac STS.

"Customers' responses have more than met our expectations," said Pei-Wen Hsu, Lincoln car marketing manager, adding that retail vehicles are lasting an average of only five days on dealer lots before they are sold. "The Lincoln team and our dealers are very excited."

In addition to the appeal of the vehicle itself, Hsu2009 Lincoln MKS says robust early sales may be a result of the unique marketing and education efforts that have been underway since the vehicle was unveiled at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

Lincoln broke tradition by announcing pricing information and package options when the MKS was first unveiled.

Plus, the marketing team recently completed extensive dealer training programs at the top 312 Lincoln dealerships in the country. These training programs were combined with consumer events that drew more than 25,000 potential customers to Lincoln showrooms during the past three months to see the brand's new flagship sedan.

"We trained sales consultants during the day, and the dealerships hosted consumer events in the evening," explained Hsu. "Each of the events resulted in an average of three to 10 pre-orders for the MKS and generated a lot of momentum around the vehicle."

Denny LaBantschnig, owner of Denny Ford Lincoln Mercury, pulled out all the stops when he hosted a consumer event for more than 200 people at his dealership in Rolla, Missouri. It was a black-tie affair, complete with music and food, but the unmistakable star of the evening was the new Lincoln MKS.

"When we pulled the cover off of the car, you could hear a pin drop," LaBantschnig said. "Everybody loved it."

LaBantschnig says his guests - many of them drivers of competing vehicles - were most impressed by the MKS's design.

"We had people who just looked at the car and said, ‘Wow!' " he added.

Consumers were equally impressed by the class-exclusive features and options available on the MKS, such as the industry-exclusive SYNC, Easy Fuel Capless fuel Filler System, SecuriCode Next-Generation Keypad, a premium THX-certified audio system, 20-inch wheels, heated rear seats and the voice activated navigation system with SIRIUS Travel Link, he said.

"Educated people understand the technology in the MKS, and they're excited about all of the things this vehicle can do," said LaBantschnig. "They love that they can get real-time weather and sports scores and even gas prices using SIRIUS Travel Link."

According to LaBantschnig, marketing efforts leading up to the mid-June launch of the vehicle had a big impact on both sales consultants and potential customers.

"This is the first time that people actually came in and trained us at the dealership. It was a very hands-on experience, and it gave us the knowledge we needed to be able to talk intelligently with our customers," he said. "It also got our staff excited and created a lot of buzz around the vehicle prior to launch."

That early buzz resulted in close to 10,000 pre-orders for the MKS, says Hsu, many of them from conquest customers.

"The Lexus ES-350 is among the top 10 vehicles being traded in for the MKS," she said.

A big factor drawing customers to the MKS is the fact that the vehicle runs well on regular unleaded gasoline, a true competitive advantage given today's skyrocketing fuel costs. With regular unleaded gas, the MKS still delivers 273 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque - and 24 miles per gallon on the highway.

"You don't have to compromise performance by using regular unleaded gas," said Hsu. "Combine that with elegant styling, class-leading technology and an attractive price point - just more than $38,000 including destination - and you have attainable luxury."

LaBantschnig says the MKS signifies the dawn of a new era for Lincoln.

"People are longing for something different. That's what sells vehicles," he said. "The MKS hits that market niche for something totally distinctive from Lincoln."
