Subaru unleashes new 265 HP 2009 Impreza WRX

Performance leaps to a higher level in the 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX thanks to a 265-horsepower turbocharged intercooled Boxer engine, retuned suspension and wider, lower-profile summer performance tires.

The Impreza WRX moves closer to its supercar stablemate, the WRX STI in spirit, performance and styling with a new familial grille, integrated front spoiler and body-side moldings and gunmetal gray alloy wheels2009 Subaru Impreza WRX.

The project team developing the 2009 WRX had a clear aim, summed up as "Kyo-Ka" (translated from Japanese as "strengthening"). To reach their goal, the 2009 WRX, Subaru engineers thoroughly revamped the car's performance character. With a larger turbocharger, increased boost and a new low-density catalyst for reduced exhaust backpressure, the WRX engine now produces 265 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 244 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,000 rpm (vs. 224 hp and 226 lb.-ft. in the 2008 model.)

To supplement the increased power, Subaru re-tuned the WRX suspension, increasing spring rates and adding thicker stabilizer bars. Standard 17 7-inch alloy wheels wear 225/45R17 summer performance tires, compared to 205/50R17 all-season tires on the 2008 WRX.

The 2009 Impreza WRX is equipped exclusively with a 5-speed manual transmission and, like all Subarus, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) stability and traction control system, standard on all Impreza models for 2009, helps to enhance road handling safety. An Incline Start Assist feature can help prevent the vehicle from rolling backward when being driven away from a stop on a hill.

Rally-Inspired Interior
The WRX interior for 2009 gains new WRX-exclusive carbon black checkered upholstery, accented by red stitching. A standard tilt and telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel is accented by red stitching, and standard aluminum-alloy pedal covers now include the driver's footrest. Performance-design front seats come with the head restraint integrated into the backrest and provides a one-piece, sporty look.

The optional Premium Package gains a power moonroof for 2009; other contents carry over, including the 10-speaker audio upgrade with auxiliary input jack, projector-beam fog lights, dual-mode heated front seats, heated exterior irrors and a windshield wiper de-icer. GM delivers 17 models with EPA fuel economy

From nicely equipped entry subcompacts to award-winning midsize sedans and a capable, compact SUV, General Motors offers plenty of choices for consumers who want to wring more miles out of a gallon of gas. Seventeen 2008 GM models – more than any other automaker – achieve EPA fuel economy of 30 miles per gallon or higher.

Chevrolet leads the pack with eight models – including the hot-selling Chevrolet Malibu midsize sedan, the 2008 North American Car of the Year – followed by Saturn with five and Pontiac with four. Topping the mpg performers are the recently released Chevrolet Cobalt XFE (Extended Fuel Economy) and Pontiac G5 XFE sedans, equipped with a 2.2L four-cylinder engine and a five-speed manual transmission that deliver 36 mpg and 35 mpg, respectively, on the highway. In fact, Cobalt XFE’s highway fuel economy beats a comparably equipped 2009 Toyota Corolla.

“GM has been and continues to be a leader in delivering a broad range of fuel-efficient vehicles to customers,” said Mark LaNeve, GM North America vice president, Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. “In addition to the 17 models for 2008 that achieve 30 mpg or better on the highway, many of our vehicles either win or are strong contenders in their segments.

“Our customers want a break from high fuel prices and so do we: That is why we are demonstrating leadership and fully leveraging our global technology resources to address pressing automotive energy needs with biofuels such as E85 ethanol, hybrids, extended-range electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cells.”

Here’s a brand-by-brand look at GM’s 30-mpg-plus highway performers, along with actual EPA estimated highway fuel economy:

Chevrolet: Aveo sedan, Aveo5 (both 32 with automatic transmission, 34 with manual); Cobalt coupe and sedan (30 to 33, depending on engine and transmission selection); Cobalt XFE coupe (36); Malibu 2.4L (30 with four-speed transmission; 32 with six-speed); Malibu Hybrid (32), HHR (30 with 2.2L and automatic or manual transmission) and HHR Panel (30 with 2.2L and automatic or manual transmission).

The Chevrolet Malibu, Malibu Hybrid and Cobalt XFE coupe are new models for 2008. The Cobalt XFE uses revised engine calibration, low rolling-resistance tires, a new, 3.74:1 final drive ratio and other technologies to drive a 9-percent highway fuel economy improvement and outdistance comparably equipped competitors such as the Honda Civic, Ford Focus and 2009 Toyota Corolla.

Pontiac : G5 (31 to 33, depending on engine and transmission selection); G5 XFE coupe (35); G6 2.4L sedan (30); Vibe (31 with automatic transmission, 33 with manual transmission).

The G5 XFE is new for 2008; it achieves an EPA estimated 35 mpg highway using the same powertrain and tire efficiencies as the Cobalt XFE.

Saturn: Astra 5-Door XE and XR; Astra 3-Door XR (all 30 with automatic transmission, 32 with manual); Aura XE four-cylinder (30); Aura Green Line Hybrid (32); Vue Green Line Hybrid (32).

Both Astra and Vue are all-new for 2008. Edmunds.com recently named Astra its top-rated coupe under $25,000.

Volkswagen Jetta TDI vehicles eligible for US$1300 tax credit

Volkswagen of America, Inc announced that buyers of the Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen are eligible for a $1,300 Federal Income Tax Credit. The Internal Revenue Service has issued a certification letter affirming that the vehicles qualify for the Advanced Lean Burn Technology Motor Vehicle income tax credit.

"The $1,300 tax credit provides an even greater value to the upcoming Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen," said Mark Barnes, COO, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "Our clean diesel vehicles offer consumers the fuel efficiency that they're looking for while providing power, utility, performance, safety and excellent value."

Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen showcase the best of both worlds, an alternative fuel vehicle with no compromises. Fuel efficiency, performance and convenience come standard with the 50-state compliant Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen models, which meet the most stringent emissions standards in California. Vehicles are currently available to test drive at local Volkswagen dealers, both models will be available for sale this August.

While the Environmental Protection Agency estimates the Jetta TDI at an economical 29 mpg city and 40 mpg highway, Volkswagen went a step further to show real world fuel economy of the Jetta TDI. Leading third-party certifier, AMCI, tested the Jetta TDI and found it performed 24 percent better in real world conditions, achieving 38 mpg in the city and 44 mpg on the highway.

The Jetta TDI models come standard with Volkswagen's Prevent and Preserve Safety System, consisting of numerous standard safety features. Both the Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen include six airbags, with optional rear side airbags, and like all 2009 model year Volkswagens, Jetta TDIs also feature standard Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) for added safety.

Also standard for 2009 is Volkswagen's Carefree Maintenance Program, with this program there are no charges for the scheduled maintenance described in the vehicle's maintenance booklet for the length of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty -- three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Lexus announces price changes on four models

Lexus announced manufacturer's suggested retail prices (MSRP) for the 2009 SC 430 luxury hardtop convertible, LX 570 premium luxury utility vehicle, GX 470 luxury utility vehicle, and the current RX 400h hybrid luxury utility vehicle.

The 2009 model year SC 430 luxury hardtop convertible receives new side mirrors with incorporated turn signals and will have a base MSRP $66,805, an increase of 0.7 percent orLexus $450.

The 2009 LX 570 will be available in an all-new Costa Azul Mica exterior color and will feature an available Luxury Package that includessemi-aniline leather-trimmed seats, Bubinga wood-trim, cool box, smart card key and 20-inch alloy wheels with a unique finish. The LX 570 base MSRP will be $75,705, an increase of 1.3 percent or $1,005.

The GX 470 carries over unchanged for the 2009 model year and will have a base MSRP of $47,615, an increase of 0.6 percent or $300.

The 2008 RX 400h front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive hybrid luxury utility vehicles will carry base MSRPs of $42,080 and $43,480 respectively, an increase of 1.2 percent or $500. Pricing for the 2009 RX 350, which went on sale in February, remains unchanged with an MSRP of $37,700 for the front-wheel drive model and $39,100 for the all-wheel drive.

MSRP does not include a delivery, processing and handling fee of $825.

Volkswagen gets approval to acquire stake in Scania

The Volkswagen Group has received the antitrust approvals necessary to acquire a majority voting stake in Swedish truck manufacturer Scania AB. In addition to the approval by the European Commission, a large number of antitrust proceedings were required in other countries worldwide.

In March this year, Volkswagen reached an agreement with Investor AB and the Wallenberg foundations regarding the acquisition of their entire shareholdings in Scania. Volkswagen will therefore increase its share of voting rights in Scania from 37.98 percent to 68.60 percent. Its equity interest will rise to 37.73 percent (from 20.89 percent). The purchase price amounts to approximately EUR 2.8 billion. The Volkswagen Group will fully consolidate Scania in the second half of the year.

"We are delighted that Scania will now become the Group's ninth strong brand under the roof of Europe's largest automobile manufacturer," said Prof. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG. Scania now has a clear shareholder structure, he added. "As with all of our Group brands, Scania will retain its own corporate headquarters, its own culture and its own profile," said Winterkorn.

Toyota & Scion announce prices on select 2009 models

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., announced new manufacturer's suggested retail prices (MSRP) for 13 select 2009 Toyota and Scion vehicles. The overall average MSRP for the 13 models increases by $181, or 0.81 percent.

Toyota:
The 2009 Avalon full-size sedan adds to its value with additional standard equipment that includes driver and front passenger active headrests, Brake Assist, traction control, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), and a satellite radio ready color-keyed SDARS antenna and prewire. The base MSRP for Avalon will range from $27,845 for the XL grade to $35,185 for the premium Limited grade. Overall, Avalon prices will increase $520, or 1.7 percent.

The 2009 FJ Cruiser Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) adds driver and front passenger active headrests, roll-sensing curtain airbags, a VSC cut-off switch, front map light, and a driver-side vanity mirror as standard equipment. The FJ also adds three new colors - - non-metallic Black, Silver, and Iceberg White with all-white monochromatic finish. The base MSRP for the FJ Cruiser will range from $23,320 for the 4x2 V6 with a five-speed automatic transmission to $24,910 for the 4x4 V6 automatic. Overall, the price of the 2009 FJ Cruiser increases by $275, or 1.1 percent.

For 2009, the Land Cruiser full-size SUV adds factory privacy glass on the rear side and quarter windows as standard equipment. The base MSRP for the Land Cruiser will be $64,755, representing an increase of $655, or 1.0 percent.

The base MSRP for the 2009 4Runner SUV will range from $28,640 for the 4x2 SR5 V6 to $39,360 for the 4x4 Limited V8. On average the MSRP for the 2009 4Runner increases by $225, or 0.7 percent.

The base MSRP for the 2009 Highlander mid-size SUV will range from $27,600 for the Base front-wheel-drive model with a V6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission to $34,520 for the Limited four-wheel-drive V6 with a five-speed automatic. The overall average MSRP for Highlander will increase by $47, or 0.2 percent. The base MSRP for the gas-electric Highlander Hybrid will range from $34,700 for the two-row, four-wheel-drive with intelligence base model to $41,020 for the three-row, four-wheel-drive with intelligence Limited. The overall average MSRP for the Highlander Hybrid increases by $518, or 1.4 percent.

The base MSRP for the 2009 Sienna van will range from $24,540 for the seven-passenger front-wheel-drive CE grade to $37,865 for the all-wheel-drive XLE Limited. The average base MSRP for Sienna will increase $100, or 0.4 percent.

The base MSRP gas-electric Prius Hybrid will range from $22,000 for the Standard grade to $24,270 for the Touring grade. The overall average price for Prius will increase $500, or 2.2 percent.

The 2009 Corolla sedan will receive a price adjustment increase of $100, or 0.6 percent. The base MSRP will range from $15,350 for the Base grade with a five-speed manual transmission to $20,050 for the XRS grade with a five-speed automatic transmission.

A price adjustment for the 2009 Matrix will increase its MSRP by $100, or 0.5 percent. The base MSRP will range from $16,290 for the 4x2 Standard grade with a five-speed manual transmission to $21,950 for the 4x2 XRS with a five-speed automatic.

The 2009 Camry sedan will receive an MSRP adjustment reflecting an increase of $225, or 1.0 percent. The base MSRP will range from $19,145 for the Camry four-cylinder with a five-speed manual transmission to $28,695 for the XLE V6 with a six-speed automatic. The gas-electric Camry Hybrid will receive a price adjustment increase of $500, or 1.9 percent. The new MSRP will be $26,150.

Scion:
After its introduction last year, the Scion xD carries over unchanged. The manual transmission xD will have an MSRP of $14,650, reflecting an increase of $100, or 0.7 percent. The automatic transmission model will be $15,450 representing an increase $100, or 0.7 percent.

The effective dates for each vehicle's pricing will vary as many will correspond with their on-sale date. Scion xD pricing went into effect on July 14 and Sienna pricing on July 24. Pricing for the Prius, RAV4, FJ Cruiser, 4Runner and Land Cruiser will become effective on August 1. Avalon pricing will take effect on August 11 while pricing for the Highlander and Highlander Hybrid will become effective August 25. Prices for previously launched 2009 vehicles (Corolla, Matrix, Camry and Camry Hybrid) will become effective with North American production beginning August 25 and Japan-sourced vehicles arriving on or after August 25.

Effective with vehicles processed on or after July 14, 2008 the amount of delivery, processing and handling fees (DPH) increased by $60 on all Toyota Division vehicles and $50 on all Scion vehicles. The DPH for Toyota Division vehicles is now $720 for passenger cars and $745 for light trucks. The DPH for all Scion vehicles is $670. The DPH fee for vehicles distributed by Southeast Toyota and Gulf States Toyota may vary.

GM unveils new Chevrolet Camaro

General Motors unveiled the production version of the much anticipated new Chevrolet Camaro that is due to go on sale in North America next year.

In Melbourne, the Australian-based designers and engineers involved in the new heritage-inspired coupe held their own reveal event at GM Holden’s headquarters in Port2010 Chevrolet Camaro Melbourne, giving a first glimpse of the iconic sports car that underwent much of its development and testing on Australian roads.

The new Camaro exemplifies GM’s global development process with the design concept originating in the United States; engineering directed by GM’s global rear-wheel-drive team in Australia; validation conducted on roads around the world; and assembly to take place in Canada.

Joining onlookers at the reveal was reigning V8 Supercar Champion and Camaro enthusiast, Garth Tander, who brought his own 1969 Camaro SS to Port Melbourne to meet the newest member of the Chevrolet family. Members of the Melbourne-based Camaro Car Club also joined the celebration by bringing their historical vehicles to the display.

With GM’s global rear-wheel drive team based in Australia, much of the design and engineering work for the new Camaro was undertaken in Victoria, giving this vehicle an important place in Australia’s automotive history.

The new Chevrolet Camaro combines great looks and performance; advanced technology and surprising efficiency.

Ed Peper, GM North America Vice President for Chevrolet, said the Camaro delivered all of the things that make Chevrolet such a revered, global brand.

“It competes with the world’s best sports cars and does so with styling, fuel economy and value our competitors simply can’t match.

“The new Chevrolet Camaro delivers a thoroughly modern, advanced package of performance, comfort and technology.

“It’s a sports car for a new generation of enthusiasts that doesn’t forget the heritage that helped make the original a cultural icon. That is no small feat and it took a worldwide commitment to achieve it,” Peper said.

Australian, Peter Hughes, Camaro Exterior Design Manager, said they made sure there were many elements and cues that remained distinctly Camaro to make the new model instantly recognisable.

“We’re incredibly proud of how faithful the production version is to the original concept. This is a 21st century sports car that acknowledges its iconic heritage, while at the same time is smoothly integrated into a very contemporary exterior,” Hughes said.

Details such as frameless door windows contribute to the overall feeling of quality, substance and technical prowess.

A well-executed balance of heritage, modern design and attention to detail also characterises the Camaro’s interior. A pair of deeply recessed instrument binnacles that feature round gauges in square housings gives a nod to classic Camaros.

Large, chrome-trimmed controls, low-gloss surfaces and premium fabric or acrylic appliqués convey a richness that is unprecedented in previous Camaro models – and challenge its contemporary competitors.

Advanced powertrain technologies, including engines with direct injection and Active Fuel Management, give the vehicle a balance of exhilarating performance and good fuel economy.

Gene Stefanyshyn, GM’s Global Vehicle Line Executive, who led the Australian-based engineering team on this project, said they had four key objectives when creating the new Chevrolet Camaro.

“The first was to create a bold and beautifully styled vehicle – inside and out. The second was to ensure it had the ride, handling and performance dynamics of a true sports car. The third was to create a vehicle which boasts pristine quality. Finally, we wanted to back all this with outstanding value,” Stefanyshyn said.

“This vehicle exhibits the depth and capability of our Design and Engineering teams here in Australia and I am incredibly proud of what they have achieved to help make this vehicle a reality.”

Under the bonnet of the new Camaro is an advanced, efficient 3.6L direct-injected V-6 with variable valve timing which is standard on LS and LT models. Direct injection technology helps the engine deliver more power through increased efficiency, while maintaining fuel economy and lowering hydrocarbon emissions.

The high-performance Camaro SS is equipped with a powerful 6.2L V-8, with a choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

Standard, manual transmission-equipped models receive the LS3 engine, which uses high-flow cylinder heads based on the Corvette Z06’s LS7 engine enabling great low-end torque and high-rpm power.

A new, L99 V-8 engine is used on automatic transmission-equipped SS models. This is based on the LS3 and carries all of its high-performance design features, but also includes GM’s fuel-saving Active Fuel Management feature. This enables the engine to run on only four cylinders during light-load driving conditions, such as highway cruising, to improve fuel economy.

Sales begin in North America in the first quarter of 2009.

Nissan Canada Inc. thrilled a Southern Ontario customer this morning by handing over the keys to the first 2009 Nissan GT-R supercar in Canada.

The all-new GT-R, long coveted by buyers who previously could experience the legendary car only through electronic video games, officially goes on sale today at a select number of GT-R Certified Nissan dealers across the country.

Stanislaus Gonsalves of Oakville, ON, is the first customer to drive away in his new GT-R, which he ordered in July, 2007. Alta Nissan dealer principals Edward Wong and Joe Zanchin and Jeff Parent, Vice President, Sales and Marketing at Nissan Canada Inc., presented Mr. Gonsalves with keys to his very own Black Obsidian GT-R at a special reception. Mr. Gonsalves has been a loyal customer of Alta Nissan since 1996, owning numerous Nissan vehicles over the years.

"I'm an automotive aficionado and the GT-R truly pushes the boundaries of performance and craftsmanship," said Mr. Gonsalves. "I am so excited to finally get the keys and eager to get behind the wheel to experience firsthand what this car can do."

Approximately 150 of the exotic 480-horsepower Nissan GT-R supercars are coming to the Canadian market and all have been spoken for. Deliveries will continue throughout the coming months.

"We are pleased to finally deliver the very first Canadian GT-R to an enthusiast like Mr. Gonsalves," said Parent. "Demand for the GT-R and excitement over it has been overwhelming and unprecedented with all of this year's supply already sold. We have a long list of customers waiting for their turn to one day own this highly-anticipated and iconic car."

The GT-R is available only through officially certified Nissan dealers that have met a number of strict sales, service and facilities commitments, including dedicating master technicians to GT-R service. The 2009 Nissan GT-R has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $81,900 for onewell-equipped model.

The 2009 Nissan GT-R features a 3.8-litre twin turbo V6 producing 480 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, backed by an all-new, paddle-shifted, dual clutch sequential 6-speed rear transaxle. It features the use of a world's first independent rear transaxle ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive system, which places the transmission, transfer case and final drive at the rear of the vehicle, optimizing weight distribution and maximizing handling capability.

A 2009 Nissan GT-R recently set a lap time of 7 minutes 29 seconds at the famed Nurburgring Nordschleife, one of the fastest times achieved by a production-spec vehicle to date, and has been timed in independent magazine tests at 0 - 60 miles per hour in under 3.5 seconds.

Model T owners celebrate its 100th anniversary

A century after the Model T put the world on wheels, Ford continues building on its tradition with industry-leading, high-volume technologies including SYNC and EcoBoost engines, a new fuel-efficient powertrain lineup, a new small car for the world as well as America's most head-turning crossover and most-capable pickup.

"Henry Ford and his Model T helped reshape the landscape of America a century ago by making the automobile accessible to the average person," said Bill Ford, Ford Motor Company executive chairman.

"My great-grandfather's dream was born from a true spirit of innovation that is very much alive today in everything that we do at Ford. And the best way for us to celebrate and honor the Model T is to continue to redefine his vision for this century by making the safest, highest quality and cleanest vehicles that are of great value," said Ford.

Ford will recognize this historic milestone during the next six months through a series of regional celebrations joined by thousands of Model T owners and global enthusiasts, including here at the world's largest gathering of Model Ts since they left the factory - "T Party 2008" in Richmond, Ind.

Ford, with support from the Ford Motor Company Fund, is the "T Party 2008" celebration's title sponsor for the week-long event that is hosted by the Model T Ford Club of America. Nearly 1,000 Model Ts, including vehicles from England, Norway, Australia and New Zealand and more than 20,000 Model T owners and enthusiasts are expected to participate.

"Celebrating a hundred years of the Model T is a great milestone for Ford Motor Company," said Edsel Ford, great-grandson of Henry Ford and member of the Board of Directors at Ford Motor Company. "No other vehicle has put its mark on the industry or world like the Model T, and true to my great-grandfather's vision, it was the simple, durable car that millions could afford and that many still treasure today."

Putting the World on Wheels - Then and Now:
The Model T chugged into history Oct. 1, 1908. Henry Ford called it the "universal car." It became the symbol of low-cost, reliable transportation that could get through when other vehicles and horse-drawn wagons were stuck in muddy roads. The Model T won the approval of millions of Americans, who affectionately dubbed it "Tin Lizzie."

The first Model Ts sold for $825 (for a two-door roadster) - an unexpected bargain compared to other cars. But even more remarkable is that during its 19 years of production, Ford continued to steadily lower its price, thanks to manufacturing efficiencies including the moving assembly line introduced in 1913.

In addition to its affordability, Model T stands out as the industry's truly the first global car. By 1921, it accounted for almost 57 percent of the world's automobile production.

Today, Ford is launching an important new small car - the Fiesta - around the world. Designed and developed in Europe for customers in Europe, Asia, South Africa, Australia and the Americas, Fiesta will come to market around the world between 2008 and 2010.

The new Fiesta is the first major product of Ford's new global product development process and represents an important opportunity for Ford to show customers that it intends to be a large player in the growing small car segment worldwide.

"In the same way the Model T opened up the world for so many, the new Ford Fiesta will set a new standard for value in the same spirit as Henry Ford's Model T," said Mulally. "With a growing demand around the world for safe and fuel-efficient transportation, Ford is once again delivering a high-quality, durable car for us all."

Ford also is expanding its leadership in crossovers with an unconventional approach - the Ford Flex. Its contemporary design provokes strong opinions. Its new technologies are smart and engaging. All in all, Ford Flex is like no other vehicle on the road today.

Ford has good powertrain news on the way, as well. EcoBoost engine technology, which features turbocharging and direct injection, will be available on 500,000 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles annually in North America within the next five years. These engines make a range of vehicles - from small cars to full-size pickups - fun to drive and deliver up to 20 percent better fuel economy and up to 15 percent improved emissions.

EcoBoost - combined with multi-speed transmissions, advanced electric power steering, weight reductions and aerodynamic improvements - is part of Ford Motor Company's strategy to deliver sustainable, quality vehicles that customers want and value.

The high-volume engines begin rolling out in 2009 on products including Ford Flex and Lincoln MKS, keeping alive a heritage of powertrain innovation that dates back to Model T. Tin Lizzie's original engines boasted 20 hp, with a top speed of 40-45 mph.

The front-mounted, 2.9-liter, four-cylinder, flex-fuel engine was the first single block motor with removable cylinder head, and remains the basis for most of today's modern engines.

"When it comes to features, Model T bares little resemblance to today's Ford lineup," said Mark Fields, Ford's president of The Americas. "Only a few basic amenities - such as a horn - came standard on the Model T, while today we have industry-leading technology like SYNC, which integrates Bluetooth devices into your daily drive, and SIRIUS TravelLink, which can tell you where to find the cheapest gas or best restaurant on your journey."

The award-winning Ford SYNC system - developed with Microsoft - connects people and their portable devices in the vehicle, including media players and Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones.

SYNC is offered exclusively on nearly every new Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicle and it's on track to reach 1 million sales in early 2009.

Millions of customers already have enjoyed the capability that comes standard on Ford vehicles, including F-150, which is new for 2009 and offers the most capability, choice and smart features in the light-duty pickup segment.

From the new 2009 F-150 to the F-450 Super Duty pickup, Ford offers the widest array of full-size pickups with the most capability. Plus, Ford has more trucks on the road with 250,000 miles or more than any other manufacturer.

They come by it honestly. From the beginning, the Model T provided the most robust underpinnings for commercial vehicles and delivered maximum utility at a value. The Model T car chassis was simple, strong and lightweight with a unique three-point suspension that isolated the frame and powertrain from road shock that would cause other less sophisticated chassis designs to flex under heavy loads.

In 1914, Henry Ford began producing a commercial chassis that was literally a Model T devoid of any bodywork except the cowl, engine cover, radiator, front fenders and headlamps. Customers picked up the Model T chassis and took it to the independent bodyworks of their choice - much like today's F-Series and E-Series commercial chassis cabs.

By 1925, Ford was manufacturing its first factory-produced domestic pickup truck - the Ford Model T Runabout - with a pickup body. Ford also offered a the heavier duty, one-ton rated Model TT pickup - akin to today's F-Series Super Duty.

"The spirit that was born from the Model T is very much alive today in everything that we do at Ford," said Fields. "Because of that spirit, Ford continues to deliver high-quality, affordable products and technologies for the masses."

* October 1, 1908 marks the anniversary of the first Model T built for sale.

* The Model T was the first low-priced, mass-produced automobile with standard, interchangeable parts.

* On Dec. 18, 1999, the Ford Model T was named "Car of the Century" by a panel of 133 automotive journalists and experts who began with a list of 700 candidates in 1996 and sequentially narrowed the nominees through seven rounds of balloting over three years.

- black alloys to contrast striking, red coachwork

Hand-built by skilled craftsmen in the company’s Wiltshire home, the Invicta S1 was the first car to be successfully built from a single piece of carbon fibre.

Ford receives highest grades on ERI automotive industry report card

DEARBORN, Mich. -- The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) announced today that Ford Motor Company once again received one of the highest grades awarded on the Economic Reciprocity Initiative (ERI) automotive industry report card. Results of the study were released at the NAACP's 99th Annual Convention, themed Power, Justice, Freedom & The Vote, at the Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati, OH.

The NAACP ERI report card measures the exchange of economic costs and benefits between African-American consumers and various industries. The scoring is based on activities in employment, advertising/marketing, procurement/vendor relationships, dealerships, and charitable/philanthropic activity.

"This is an exciting time for Ford to receive this recognition from the NAACP as we continue to show a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, even during these challenging times for the automotive industry," said Jim Vella, president, Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services.

While the industry scored a "B" for its philanthropic efforts, Ford continued to display a strong performance in this category earning an "A-" in this area and a "B+" in the Supplier Diversity category, which represents one-third of the overall grade.

Ford also is participating as a platinum sponsor of this year's convention and serves as title sponsor of the Youth Freedom Dinner on Wednesday, July 16 for the ninth consecutive year. Julien "Lil X" Lutz, critically acclaimed Hollywood director to the stars -- Usher, Alicia Keys, Nelly Furtado, and P. Diddy, to name a few -- serves as this year's keynote speaker.

The exhibit then opens in January 2009 in the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, TN.

Volkswagen Jetta IndiaVolkswagen begins market introduction of the Jetta in India. The sedan – eight million of which have been sold since 1979 – will be available in three versions. At market launch the innovative 6-speed DSG dual clutch transmission will be offered. Other comfort and convenience features round out the program.

The Jetta will be offered in three equipment lines in India. For the entry level model, the Jetta 1.6 Trendline (75 kW / 102 PS), prices start at the currency equivalent of € 18,970. The Jetta 1.9 TDI Trendline (77 kW / 105 PS) is the entry-level variant for diesel engines, costing about € 21,176. The top model, the Jetta 1.9 TDI Comfortline DSG, will sell for about € 24,411.

These engine/transmission combinations, which have enjoyed worldwide success, are linked to equipment packages. Even entry-level models have features such as Climatic or Climatronic, alloy wheels, metallic paint, power mirrors and RCD 300 radio with up to 8 loudspeakers. The top version is rounded out by additional comfort, convenience and infotainment features. These include, for example, power leather seats, rain sensor, cruise control system, an extensive infotainment system (RCD 500 radio with 10 loudspeakers, CD changer, multifunctional display) and additional side airbags in the rear.

Next to the Passat, the Jetta is the second vehicle of the Volkswagen brand to be produced in the Aurangabad plant for India. The Phaeton and Touareg continue to be marketed in India. There is a continued push to expand the dealer and service infrastructure, which is an integral part of the schedule.

Hyundai India launches new Kappa Engine

Chennai : Hyundai Motor India Ltd, India's fastest growing auto manufacturer and largest passenger car exporter today rolled out the i10 powered by the all new 1.2 litre advanced Kappa engine at its plant in Chennai. The in-line, four-cylinder, 1.2 litre engine while adding to the power will also deliver greater operational efficiency in terms of both fuel consumption and emissions.

The launch of the new Kappa engine coincides with the inauguration of the Engine & Transmission plant at Sriperumbudur which will produce the brand new Kappa engine to be fitted first in the i10 meant both for the domestic and the export market. The new Engine & transmission plant which cost over US$250 million has a capacity of 250,000 units per annum.

Announcing the launch H S Lheem, Managing Director, HMIL, said, “Efficiencies in fuel consumption and environment are the prerogatives for any automobile manufacturer. And Hyundai, as a conscientious global corporate citizen, prioritises these with continuous innovation in technology and design. Our new Kappa engine is the best in class today, with more power, less fuel consumption and a lower CO2 and overall emissions. The aluminium block, first in its segment Double Overhead Cam Shaft (DOHC), 16 valve with 32 bit microprocessor Kappa engine delivers a class leading 80PS/5200rpm and 11.4Kgm/4000rpm torque which results in excellent driveability both in city as well as on the highway. The engine is Euro 5 ready and emits only 119g/km of CO2 which is the lowest for this class of cars.

The Kappa engine i10 will now be also with an automatic transmission. A four speed 4-speed, automatic gearbox is mated to this all new, powerful engine which will add to the convenience of city driving.

Developed over a period of 48 months at a cost of US$421 million, the Kappa project harnessed all of Hyundai's engineering know-how and will raise the bar in terms of power, performance, fuel efficiency and environment and uses some cutting edge technology like offset crank and light weight engine material to enhance performance.

The Kappa i10 will be launched in three variants the Magna, Sportz and the Asta with all top end features like the sunroof, 2-Din audio system, a unique red pack for the Sportz interiors and some class leading safety features like anti-lock braking system (ABS) and dual airbags. The new kappa i10 will be sold along with the existing Epsilon 1.1 litre engine variant and will be available in a range of 10 colours.

Hyundai announces world’s first LPG hybrid production car

HyundaiPotential export markets include Australia

Hyundai Motor Company plans to start retail sales of its first LPG-electric hybrid vehicle in July 2009. To be sold initially in the Korean domestic market, the Elantra LPI Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) is the world’s first hybrid vehicle to be powered by liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and the first to adopt advanced Lithium Polymer (Li-Poly) batteries.

Powered by a Liquefied Petroleum Injected (LPI) Gamma engine displacing 1.6 litres, a 15kW electric motor and a continuously variable transmission, the Elantra LPI HEV is a mild-type hybrid capable of delivering a competitive fuel economy rating.

“The Elantra LPI HEV demonstrates Hyundai’s innovative approach: We have leveraged Hyundai’s world leadership in LPG-fuelled vehicles to develop a hybrid that will be very economical to operate,” said Dr. Hyun-Soon Lee, president of the Research and Development Division.

Comparing operating costs among different types of hybrid vehicles currently available in the marketplace, the Elantra LPI HEV promises to be the cheapest of all to run. The Elantra LPI HEV promises to be as much as 40 percent cheaper to operate than other competitor models in the marketplace and 50 percent less than a conventional Elantra model powered by a petrol only engine. (Calculations are based on Korean domestic retail price of 1,907.08 KRW per litre of petrol and LPG price of 1,828.65 KRW per kilogram as of the first week of June 2008).

The Elantra LPI HEV will have a premium cost compared to a conventional Elantra due to the extra hardware (Li-Poly battery, DC motor and electrical control system). However, with the resulting fuel savings, Elantra LPI HEV buyers can expect to recover the extra cost of the vehicle in about two years.

In addition, the Elantra LPI HEV emits just 103g/km of CO2 and 90 percent fewer emissions than an equivalent standard petrol powered Elantra to qualify as a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV).

The Elantra LPI HEV will be the first car in the world to use lithium polymer rechargeable batteries, which will be supplied solely by LG Chem, one of the leading producers of the batteries. Li-poly batteries have significant advantages over lithium-ion batteries including higher energy density, lower manufacturing costs, being more robust to physical damage and they can also take more charge-discharge cycles before storage capacity begins to degrade.

Hyundai developed its very first hybrid electric vehicle in 1995 when it unveiled the Future Green Vehicle at the Seoul Motor Show. In 1999, it showed an Elantra HEV and in 2000, an Accent HEV, both of which featured hard-type parallel electric drive systems and integrated Starter Generator technology. However, these research development vehicles did not go into mass production.

In 2004, the company delivered 50 Getz petrol-electric hybrid vehicles (B-segment vehicles badged as Hyundai Getz in the Korean domestic market) to Korean government agencies as part of a fleet demonstration project. These were mild-type hybrid systems using 12kW motors and nickel metal hydride batteries. The hybrid technology development program continued to expand and in 2005, the Hyundai Automotive Group delivered 350 more units to the demonstration fleet, 730 more units in 2006 and 1,682 more units in 2007, including Accent HEVs.

Current plants call for expanding the hybrid vehicle line-up to include mid-sized sedans in 2010.

Initial sales of the Elantra LPI HEV are to be restricted to the Korean domestic market. Hyundai is investigating export opportunities in markets with an excellent LPG distribution infrastructure, such as China and Australia.

As the Elantra LPI HEV remains under development, more detailed technical specifications will be released closer to the July 2009 launch date.

Fiat 500 celebrates its first birthday

FiatThe award-winning Fiat 500, which has received countless honours this year, adds an extra important one this weekend – its first birthday celebrations.

Although it only arrived in the UK in January this year, the popular supermini was first launched in Italy on 4 July 2007, and the Fiat Group is celebrating its anniversary with a series of bold, elaborate parties across the world, including the UK.

The date of this landmark occasion is especially significant as last year’s Italian launch of the car was exactly 50 years after the original introduction of Dante Giacosa’s classic post-war 500.

The UK party, hosted by TV presenter Alex Zane, is called the Fiat 500 PicNic and takes place at Alexandra Park, North London. It’s designed to be a traditional British summer outdoor gathering, but with a special 500 twist.

With invitations extended to more than 5,000 specially-invited Fiat 500 drivers and potential owners, this Saturday’s (5 July) PicNic initiative, which was conceived to share the passion and emotion of the huge Fiat 500 community, will feature live music, delicious Italian food and drink, outdoor games, big-screen sports coverage and special ‘chill-out’ zones for participants.

The London event is part of a series of global parties celebrating the hugely successful first year of Fiat’s iconic city car. Athens, Budapest, Copenhagen, London, Milan, Munich, Palermo, Paris, Rome, Rotterdam, Tokyo, Valencia, Hel, Liège, Zurich, and Cape Town are the chosen cities that, either in parks or on beaches, will welcome thousands of people brought together by the new car.

Music, art, and fun are the ingredients which will guarantee a successful event involving new Fiat 500 owners and those who are still waiting to get one (222,000 have been ordered so far).

Chevrolet official car of Spanish national basketball team

Toyota brings 'Highway to the Future: Mobile Hybrid Experience' to Hybridfest 2008

MADISON, Wis. -- Toyota is bringing its nationwide tour called "Highway to the Future: Mobile Hybrid Experience," to Hybridfest 2008 in Madison, Wis., on July 19-20th as part of the Dane County Fair. The tour is designed to provide consumers with a firsthand opportunity to experience automotive hybrid technology and learn what they can do to make a difference in the environment.

The tour will stop at numerous public events nationwide in 2008 and consists of three simultaneously traveling exhibits. Consumers will have an opportunity to learn about hybrid technology through a number of interactive, educational stations and test drive a Toyota Prius, Camry Hybrid or Highlander Hybrid.

"This tour invites consumers to learn more about the benefits and technology of hybrid vehicles as well as Toyota's environmental initiatives," said Keith Dahl, national engagement marketing manager for Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. "Two of our key goals are to provide people the opportunity to take an up-close look at how hybrid vehicles operate and encourage lifestyle changes that can help protect the environment."

Highway to the Future: Mobile Hybrid Experience serves as an interactive mobile exhibit to the environment and alternative fuels. The exhibit and ride-and-drive will be located at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison from 10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 19th and from noon -4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 20th.

There are four distinct interactive learning areas within the exhibit:
- "Alternative Fuels: Fueling the Future," identifies the differences in the various types of alternative fuels and how they are produced.

- "Environment and Resources: Small Steps, Big Difference," shows attendees what they can do to make a difference to the environment.

- "The Prius Driving Experience" simulates the current Hybrid Synergy Drive technology allowing visitors to interact with the system while on-screen instructions offer driving tips.

- "Hybrid Technology: Not All Hybrids are Created Equal" exhibit gives visitors a better understanding of the various hybrid technology options on the market and how hybrids benefit the consumer and the environment.

In addition, the exhibit provides attendees the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a hybrid vehicle to experience Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive system.

The hybrid experience offers more than just interesting educational activities; it also is designed to minimize its own environmental impact. Toyota will plant 50,000 trees in honor of those visiting the experience in conjunction with the National Arbor Day Foundation.

These trees will help offset the "carbon footprint" of the trucks transporting the tour across the country and will continue to have a positive impact on the environment for years to come.

Ford’s Model T played leading role in Hollywood

Dearborn, Mich. - The Ford Model T has had a long and storied Hollywood career, stretching from the silent-film era of Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd and the Keystone Cops to a drive-on role in this year's George Clooney film "Leatherheads."

In part, the Model T's popularity on the big screen comes because the car and the medium emerged at approximately the same time 100 years ago – and both became very popular almost overnight.

"The Model T was the 'it' car of the 1920s. It was the best selling vehicle at the time. and everyone in Hollywood and beyond wanted one." said Alessandro Uzielli, head of Ford's Brand Entertainment division.

As the first moviemakers moved beyond static interior shots to the outdoors, it was only natural to capture the motion and movement created by the car. In that way, Hollywood reflected the changes brought on by the automobile and mass migration to cities.

While the Model T appears in the short films of such early Hollywood comedians as Keaton and Lloyd, it was the laugh-out-loud lunacy of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy that made the Model T a featured player.

In one of the last and funniest silent-era films, "Big Business," (1929) Laurel and Hardy are selling Christmas trees out of the back of a Model T truck. When a cranky neighbor rejects their pitch and the tree is damaged, the pair takes it out on the man's house as he inflicts reciprocal destruction on their vehicle.

A "Perfect Day," (1929) Laurel and Hardy's third talkie, features several gags on-board a Model T. When Ollie asks Stan to "throw out the clutch," he reaches down and does just that. In the end, the car drives into a puddle that swallows the pair, their passengers and the car.

In "Hog Wild," (1930) Hardy climbs a ladder mounted on Laurel's Model T to install a radio antenna and Laurel accidentally drives off with Hardy still clinging to the ladder. In the finale, the car gets crushed between two streetcars like an accordion – and ironically, seems to run better for it.

Another gimmick Model T was used in the duo's 1928 silent hit, "Two Tars." In that short film, Laurel and Hardy create havoc in a traffic jam and then escape in their Model T into a railroad tunnel. The resulting unseen collision with a train causes them to emerge in a roadster that's been squashed sideways – but still runs, of course.

That these were among Hollywood's earliest uses of cars tricked out for special effects doesn't surprise Uzielli.

"There were so many Model Ts back then that it was easy and pretty cheap to fabricate them for special effects in the movies," he said.

Rick Lindner agrees. The Columbus, Ohio, man is both a Model T owner and a Laurel and Hardy fan.

"I always enjoyed their movies, and they always used Model Ts, and I thought they looked like such fun cars. They were an everyman's car and practically indestructible, so that's why they used them," said Lindner, who heads a Laurel and Hardy fan club in Columbus.

All in all, the Model T turns up in more than 200 movies, according to the Internet Movie Cars Database, a Web site that catalogs vehicle appearances in films.

Often, it's seen in the background or in a brief drive-by shot that opens or closes a scene. Because the car is so firmly rooted in its era, it's frequently used as a kind of visual shorthand, to telegraph the time period in which the action is set.

As such, it appears in everything from "East of Eden" (1955) and "Lawrence of Arabia" (1962) to "The Color Purple" (1985) and "Chicago" (2002).

Model Ts also appear in "Paper Moon," (1973) "The Natural" (1984) and "Legends of the Fall" (1994). They were also used extensively in the TV series "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" (1992-93) and were seen in this year's Oscar winner, "There Will Be Blood" (2007).

Even Hollywood's top animators have drawn the Model T into their productions. In TV's long-running show, "The Simpsons," one is driven by the irascible Mr. Burns, while in the full-length animated feature, "Cars," (2006) actress Katherine Helmond provides the voice for the character car Lizzie, a Model T.

Thanks to moviemaking magic, Model Ts have even been known to fly, as in the 1961 Disney comedy "The Absent-Minded Professor."

In that movie, a chemistry professor (played by Fred MacMurray) accidentally creates "flubber," a gravity-defying substance that's put to a variety of uses, including making a flying flivver out of his Model T. At the end of the movie, he pilots his flying "T" to Washington, D.C. and lands on the White House lawn where he's proclaimed a national hero.

Lindner saw the movie as a boy and it made a big impression on him. "I have a 1915 Model T touring car today because it is just like the one seen in 'The Absent-Minded Professor,' " he said.

The film earned an Oscar nomination for special effects. For the Model T, it was just another role for the co-star with the longest career in Hollywood.

Plenty of other Ford vehicles have been a part of cinematic magic, too, from the 1932 Ford coupe in "American Graffiti" (1973) to the Ford Mustang GT driven by Steve McQueen in the classic 1968 cop thriller "Bullitt."

In fact, Mustangs have had more than 500 movie roles, including in the 2007 Will Smith movie, "I Am Legend" and in NBC TV's remake of "Knight Rider," which airs as a series this fall.
