Nissan unveils new innovative concept car with X-by-Wire technology

CASCAIS, Portugal - Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., today unveiled a new concept car called "EA2" equipped with X-by-Wire technology.

X-by-Wire technology uses wires and electrical impulses instead of mechanical linkages for the control of major systems such as steering, braking and transmission. Penske Automotive reports Q1 results

Bloomfield Hills, Mich. - Penske Automotive Group, Inc., an international automotive retailer, today reported that first quarter income from continuing operations was $33.8 million, which represents a 17.4% increase over adjusted income from continuing operations of $28.8 million in the prior year. Related earnings per share were $0.36 in the first quarter, which compares to $0.31 per share in the prior year. Net income in the first quarter was $33.9 million, or $0.36 per share, compared with adjusted net income of $26.9 million, or $0.28 per share, in the prior year. Adjusted 2007 earnings exclude $12.3 million ($0.13 per share) of after-tax costs relating to the redemption of the Company's 9.625% Senior Subordinated Notes in March of 2007. In the first quarter of 2007, reported income from continuing operations and reported net income were $16.5 million, or $0.18 per share, and $14.6 million, or $0.15 per share, respectively.

BMW confirms its outlook for financial year 2008

The Board of Management of BMW AG decided at the board meeting held today to increase the amount of risk provision recognised in the first quarter of the financial year 2008 in the light of the repercussions of the international financial crisis. The financial crisis has become more severe of late. This has resulted in a drop in pre-owned car selling prices, particularly in North America, and consequently in a reduction of revenues that can be generated on vehicles at the end of lease contracts. This downward trend accelerated during the month of March. For the above reasons, it was necessary to recognise a higher risk provision for lease vehicles on the one hand and for the increased level of bad debts/payment arrears on the other. In total, an expense of euro 236 million was recognised.

Opel presents Astra sedan for first time in China

Volkswagen presents 'Park Assist Vision' at Hanover Fair

Wolfsburg - There is something decidedly fantastical about this scene: We observe the approach of a Passat estate, it stops, the driver gets out, slams the door shut and, as he walks away from the car, he aims a remote control back at it. That car now proceeds to reverse park itself into the available space, it then independently cuts the engine and activates the door locks. End of performance. In reality, there is nothing at all fantastical about this demonstration. The live performance by Volkswagen can be viewed at this year’s Hanover Fair (21 to 25 April), where the carmaker is premiering its “Park Assist Vision”, a system with the ability to guide a Passat prototype with absolute precision into a perpendicular parking space, i.e. the kind available on parking lots and in underground car parks. These parking spaces are often too narrow to allow drivers and passengers to get in and out of the car comfortably. In the not too distant future, “Park Assist Vision” will put an end to that.

Indian Hero Group signs contract with Daimler AG

Stuttgart/Delhi – The Indian Hero Group and Daimler AG signed a contract today in Delhi that governs the establishment of the Daimler Hero Motor Corporation Ltd. commercial vehicle joint venture. Approval for the new company was issued by the Indian government in March 2008, and the two partners now plan to proceed rapidly with the implementation of the joint venture.

The Daimler Hero Motor Corporation will initially produce light, medium, and heavy-duty commercial vehicles for the Indian volume market under a new brand name. The search for a suitable production location is currently under way. Negotiations are being conducted with three Indian states. The talks are expected to conclude shortly.

Mitsubishi Motors announces production, sales & export figures for March 2008

Tokyo — Mitsubishi Motors Corporation today announced global production, as well as domestic sales and export figures for both for March 2008 and the 2007 fiscal year.

Total global production came in at 137,910 units, a decline of 1.9 percent over March Last year and marking the first monthly decrease since February last year. Production volume in Japan at 93,558 units was up 8.5 percent, the 18th consecutive month of year-on-year growth and marking a new record for March since Mitsubishi Motors spun off its truck and bus operations in 2003. This growth was driven by a 32.4 percent increase in output (31,345 units) of the new Lancer for the Russian, North American, and Middle East and African markets and by a 19.5 percent increase in output (18,647 units) for export shipments of the new Outlander which continues to sell briskly in European and Chinese markets.

Tom Purves joins Rolls-Royce Motor as CEO

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars today announced that Tom Purves will join the company as its Chief Executive Officer. He will take up his new position in July, following the recent appointment of Ian Robertson to the BMW AG Board of Management. Robertson will remain Chairman of Rolls-Royce.

Purves is currently Chairman and CEO of BMW (US) Holding Corp., a position he has held since May 1999. He is also president of BMW of North America, LLC. Hyundai announces free ESP Stability Control

Hyundai has released a market-leading retail initiative intended to ensure Australian new car buyers have access to ESP Stability Control across its range of passenger vehicles.

Until June 30, the 1.6 litre Getz SX will come with free ESP Stability Control from $14,990 driveaway, while Elantra SX from $19,990 driveaway and Tucson City SX from $24,990 driveaway will also include this feature as standard during the campaign. Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. (Chairman: Fujio Cho) is pleased to announce the dates for the 41st Tokyo Motor Show 2009. The show will be held for a total of 17 days, from Friday, October 23 through Sunday, November 8, 2009 (open to public from Saturday, October 24).

GM displays record 48 products concept at Auto China 2008

CSK Auto announces Q4 & fiscal 2007 results

PHOENIX - CSK Auto Corporation, the parent company of CSK Auto, Inc, today reported net sales of $427.0 million for its fourth quarter of fiscal 2007 ended February 3, 2008, a decrease of 9.6%, or $45.2 million compared to the fourth quarter of fiscal 2006. The decrease in net sales was primarily due to one additional week of sales in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2006, which resulted in additional sales of approximately $34.3 million. Same store sales decreased 3.5% for the quarter, comprised of a decrease of 4.9% in retail same store sales and an increase of 3.1% in commercial same store sales.

For the quarter the Company reported a net loss of $12.3 million, or $0.28 loss per diluted common share compared to a net loss of $1.3 million or $0.03 loss per diluted common share for the same period last year. Gross profit as a percentage of sales increased to 47.2% from 46.9% last year.

Corvette C6 to participate in FIA GT4 Championship

This weekend Corvette will participate in the FIA GT4 European Cup at Silverstone. The English circuit hosts the first two rounds of this FIA Championship. Among the cars on the grid is the new Corvette GT4, built by Callaway. Earlier, the experienced German specialist was already responsible for a number of very successful Corvette racecars. The new car will be driven by the Dutchmen Danny van Dongen and Rogier Kroymans, both team members of the Kroymans Racing team.

The GT4 series was initiated last year. The races will be held on six European circuits (Silverstone, Monza, Oschersleben, Francorchamps, Brno and Nogaro). Race fans will notice that the race calendar more or less echoes that of the GT3 series. This is indeed the case, since the GT4 Cup derives from GT3. The difference lies in the fact that GT3 is a race series for semi-professionals, which most certainly cannot be said of GT4. From a technical point of view, the GT4 cars are much closer to the production cars in the dealer showroom. Every effort has been made to keep the GT4 Cup as accessible as possible. ‘Gentleman-drivers’ are most welcome, professional racing drivers however are not.

The new C 63 AMG will be at the start as the official Safety Car for the second DTM race of the season in Oschersleben (April 19/20, 2008). The top-of-the-range C-Class model with its 336 kW/ 457 hp AMG 6.3-litre V8-engine and modifications to the brakes, suspension, cooling and exhaust system is in perfect shape for its demanding task. The development and production of the C 63 AMG Safety Car was in the hands of specialists from the AMG development team and the AMG PERFORMANCE STUDIO.

The Safety Car operates under the aegis of the Deutscher Motor Sport Bund (DMSB - German Motor Sports Association), which has the overall responsibility for compliance with safety requirements under the rules of the DTM. The task of the C 63 AMG Safety Car is to ensure maximum safety both on and adjacent to the track in the event of an extreme situation occurring. On the instructions of the race organisers, Safety Car driver Peter Lux must place his car at the head of the DTM field and safely lead the cars around the circuit so that hazardous situations are kept under control.

Honda Civic captures AISI great designs in steel automotive excellence award

DETROIT - The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced today that it has selected the research and development team of the 2006 Honda Civic for this year's Great Designs in Steel Automotive Excellence Award based on the vehicle's evolutionary and cost-effective use of advanced high-strength steels.

The award recognizes individuals or teams from automaker, supplier and academic ranks who embrace innovation and make significant contributions to the advancement of steel in the automotive marketplace.

Award winners are chosen based on presentations from the previous year at AISI's Great Designs in Steel Seminar. Candidates from the 2007 seminar were rated in several categories, including: implementation in production; overall contribution to the advancement of steel; challenges and benefits associated with cost, weight savings and performance; replacement of competitive materials; and structural performance and efficiency. Mitsubishi to launch the new Evolution X, luxury sedan in India

Japanese car maker, Mitsubishi Motors is all set to enter the luxury sedan category in India with the launch of the Lancer Evolution X, also known as Evo 10. The evolution X will compete with the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Skoda Superb, Volkswagen Passat, Nissan Teana and Audi A4 in the segment.

According to Mitsubishi, the Evolution X will be launched in early 2009 for the Indian market,would be a completely imported car as the company has no plans to manufacture it locally. This would push up the cost of Evo 10 due to import duties and taxes. The five-seater Evo 10 is based on a completely new platform such as engine, exterior and interior design and is surprisingly light in weight, thanks to the aluminium engine block under the hood. The four-door car is powered by a 2-litre engine that gives out 295 bhp power. In addition, to further push the driving experience, the company has given the car a four-wheel drive (4WD) option.

Auto experts attribute the surge in demand for luxury cars in India is due to the rising economy of the country, which has led to better salaries among the country's upper-middle-class. The demand is further expected to grow to 15,000 units a year by 2011-12, say analysts.

Based on the sales response, the company will decide whether the car can be manufacturered locally or not.

Globally the Evo10 is priced at Rs12 lakh($30,473) to 13 lakh ($32,697) depending on the variant. However with the imposed duties on import, the cost will soar upto Rs21.70-Rs 23.5 lakh.

The company is also going to launch the Outlander sports utility vehicle in the later part of 2008, which would be manufactured at the Mitsubishi plant in Chennai.
