7 Affordable Small Cars

Are you shopping for a small car? If so, there a number of models available to you for under $15,000. Seven are featured here; ten cars if you consider three alternate models. Manufacturer incentives have made this a great time to purchase a new car; shop, compare, and save!

Chevrolet Cobalt – With the MSRP of $14,410 this new Chevrolet model is one of the lowest priced cars manufactured in the U.S. Factor in GM employee pricing and the car can be had for less than $13,000. Not bad when you consider that few new car models are priced so low. Alternatively, GM still markets the Chevrolet Cavalier an outdated, dull, and uninspiring model. Still, at prices that begin around $10,500 the Cavalier just may pique your interest.

Ford Focus – Retailing at $15,590 the Focus is also available at a lower price when incentives kick in. In addition, eligible buyers will find nice low financing rates through Ford Credit.

Honda Civic Coupe – A quality leader in this segment is the Civic, the long time entry level Honda offering. With the MSRP starting at $14,175 the car is certain to attract the notice of the value conscious brigade.

Hyundai Accent – Yes, there still is a car marketed for under ten grand. With a price tag of $9999 the Hyundai Accent takes the prize as being the lowest priced new car for sale in America. The Hyundai Elantra also retails for under 15K, so it may be a better quality alternative to the Accent. FYI: Hyundai and Kia are made by the same company, so the excitement level for this model is certain to be nearly nonexistent.

Kia Rio – With the MSRP listed at $10,745 the Kia Rio is the lowest priced four door car sold in the U.S. A low level of quality makes this car as exciting as the Chevrolet Cavalier.

Saturn ION – The floor has nearly fallen out of the bottom of the ION, price wise that is. With GM employee pricing factored in the car retails at just $11,995 for the base model.

Toyota Corolla – Always competitive, the 2006 Corolla is already available and it is priced at $14,005. The Corolla is considered by industry leaders to be the highest quality of all small cars on the market too. Alternatively, the smaller Toyota ECHO is priced more than $2,000 lower than the Corolla.

With incentives figured in prices are certainly lower than they have been in some time. However, if you want a larger car and you do not want to pay the big rates consider a good one or two year old used car. Prices for used cars have been dropping because of the increasing number of trade ins flooding dealer lots due to manufacturer incentives.

In all, now is a very good time to purchase a car; shop around and you just may save yourself several thousands of dollars off of the sticker price.

Classic Sports Cars

Why do so many people spend so much of their time and money buying old sports cars, and restoring and taking care of them? Because a classic sports car is like an old tune, a vintage wine or a black-and-white photograph--timeless, priceless and nostalgic. A classic sports car is a ‘classic’ because it traces its lineage to the first or second generation of sports cars and is at least 30 years old. Cars from the 60s are especially popular due to their flamboyant design and trademark engine roars that call attention to their power.

The Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Corvette, Pontiac GTO, Porsche 911 Carrera, Mercedes-Benz 300SL and Alfa Romeo Monza Spider are a few famous classic sports cars that wowed generations of auto enthusiasts with their sleek tailfins, chrome plating and grilles, bright, happy two-tone colors, jet tube taillights, wraparound windshields and plush upholstery.

Classic sports car collectors either lovingly restore and drive their cars or simply keep them in prime condition in their garages. Many love to show off their cars in shows and win trophies. And why not? These handsome cars are the epitome of style.

If you plan on buying a classic sports car, it is advisable to go for a car that’s reasonably priced and is simple but nevertheless interesting. American cars offer great value for the money when compared to cars from Europe, in terms of availability of spare parts for restoration. Most American classics come equipped with power windows, air-conditioning and power steering. On reliability, too, American cars tend to score better, as they require lesser maintenance and do not need frequent servicing.

Yes, it’s possible to get yourself a piece of history and some of that romance, without having to rob a bank, win a lottery or inherit a fortune.

Chevrolet Impala SS Ready for NASCAR

What's new for GM Racing? Well, aside from manufacturing auto parts like GM tail light guards for their race cars, GM also got something new for the motor sports industry. The 2007 season of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series is an important event for GM Racing team for them to unveil a brand new racing machine and an all-new engine. GM will make the NASCAR debut of the Chevrolet Impala SS "Car of Tomorrow" along with R07 small-block V-8 racing engine. Along with the debut of the Chevrolet Impala SS, GM also announced their latest development in testing vehicle aerodynamics called the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) that will be implemented in all GM race cars.

Here is how Kevin Bayless, GM Racing oval track chassis/aero Program Manager explains how the CFD works: "The best way to describe CFD is a wind tunnel in a computer. CFD is a simulation that predicts the aerodynamic forces acting on a vehicle using computational methods rather than physical measurements. CFD allows engineers and racing teams to evaluate the effects of aerodynamic changes quickly on a computer screen rather than in a conventional wind tunnel.

The CFD software requires a supercomputer because the number of calculations is immense. For example, our aerodynamic models typically have more than 10 million discrete data points that are used to calculate the forces. It really is rocket science."

GM Racing will first implement the CFD aerodynamic simulation system to the next-generation Chevrolet Impala SS that will debut in NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. GM said engineers utilized the CFD to gain insight into the effects of the new body shape, front splitter, and adjustable rear wing of the Impala SS. However, GM said although CFD is a powerful engineering tool for testing vehicle aerodynamics, it is not a replacement for the typical wind tunnel and track testing.

Bayless commented: "Although the Car of Tomorrow is highly regulated, it's not a spec race car. As a manufacturer, Chevrolet was able to define many of the details that separate the Impala SS from our competitors' cars. The headlights, grille, portions of the hood, and the tail were areas where GM Racing was able to incorporate Impala SS styling cues and brand identity. These areas are now fixed as part of the NASCAR Impala SS package."

Just wait and see how the Chevrolet Impala SS "Car of Tomorrow" performs at the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series this season.

Chevrolet Cars have always been well known for their respective safety features. Some of the best in class car features are summarized below:

Chevrolet Captiva - Safety has been given a priority in General Motors' latest premium SUV Chevrolet Captiva. The Captiva's four-channel ABS with brake assist-equipped discs intelligently assists with pedal pressure when it detects an emergency braking situation. Chevrolet Impala

There used to be something special about the phrase “Chevrolet Impala.” There was a time when this was the best and hottest car on the road. But eventually Chevrolet let this one slip out of their sites, and resorted to a less stylish model. This all changed last year when the new Chevrolet Impala was introduced to the world. The new model seemed to recapture some of the glory before it even hit showroom floors.

The Chevrolet Impala has its work cut out because it competes in the mid size class. This class is crowded with top notch players such as the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Nissan Altima. But with that being said, there is plenty of room for the Chevrolet Impala.

If you are looking for the Impala of the past, you will want to opt for the top of the line model that offers a big V8 engine which puts out more than 300 horses. This model can really fly, and it brings back memories of yesteryear.

And of course on the inside, the Chevrolet Impala has plenty of room just like it always has. The driver will be more than comfortable up front, and three across in the backseat is never a problem in the Chevrolet Impala.

Even though the Chevrolet Impala is up against stiff competition, it appears that it is holding its own just fine. As the Chevrolet Impala continues to develop, sales numbers should increase. For anybody that wants a big, American car, the Chevrolet Impala is a great option that should be considered.

Chevrolet Camaro

American made cars; the muscle cars of the past are fast becoming the most popular cars of the present. Carmakers are bringing a few of the oldies but goodies back, in body style that is. The Chevrolet Camaro is a favorite of many drivers young and old, because of the way that it looks, and the way that it makes you feel. If you are in the mood for a car that makes you feels as young as you want to be, the Camaro is the car of choice. It is known for being fast, smart looking, and great on gas.

Chevrolet is updating and changing a few of the looks of the old style Camaro, while leaving all the power, muscle and fun in tact in the Chevrolet Camaro car. The car measures to be 186 inches long. In addition, it will sit on a 110-inch platform as that is the wheelbase. The tires on the Chevrolet Camaro are 21 in the front and 22 in the back. This gives the front end a different ‘look’ than other cars, one that you will enjoy as you drive it down the highway. The engine has 400 horses, which gives you all the power you need to race down the highway, or enjoy a nice easy ride on that backcountry road. The engine is a v8 and is gas with a six-speed transmission that is manual. The best interior of the Chevrolet Camaro is the one that is made of leather, which will mark up the price of your car a bit at the same time, compared to other Camaros that are not are glitzy inside.

The first Chevrolet Camaros were put out in 1967-1970. These were the years of the muscle cars, not only from Chevrolet, but also from Ford. The sleek look and great feel of the cars of this time are making a come back, and wanted by people in our generation, meaning the here and now. The first Camaro was a little different from those of later years, as the first Chevrolet camaro was based on the nova model. In 1968, the design of the Chevrolet Camaro did change more to the body style that most are known for loving so much right now.

The Camaro has one long unibody, but presently in manufacturing, that feature could change a bit. The structure was back a bit from the front window so there was a small space. The steering of course, back in 1967 was a bit slow but with modern automobile changes, the Chevrolet Camaro is one that is easier to steer, making it a great choice for driving all day or just for a short ride.

So, what did a Chevrolet Camaro cost back in 1967 when it first came out? The cost of the car was just over $2,400. Now you can expect to pay a lot more than that, but the sticker price is going to be based on what features and add ones you give your Chevrolet Camaro. You could pay $20,000 to $30,000 depending on what you want in your car. For those purchasing a Camaro in 1967 the V8 had a two-barrel carb, and either 325 or 375 horsepower.

Chevrolet Tahoe

The last generation Chevrolet Tahoe was quite popular among people that were looking to buy a full size sport utility vehicle. The number of people and amount of luggage that you could get into the Chevrolet Tahoe was among the best in the industry. But this was not good enough for Chevrolet. Instead, they decided to give this model a complete overhaul for this year. Not only does the exterior have a new look, but the interior looks as good as ever.

The number one selling point of the Chevrolet Tahoe is that you can transport your family, as well as a large amount of goods without any trouble at all. If you do not want to buy a minivan, but still need the space, the Chevrolet Tahoe is the car that you have been searching for.

In addition to its freshened look inside and out, the Chevrolet Tahoe is again available with four wheel drive. This is a major selling point of the Chevrolet Tahoe, especially for people that live in an area that gets a lot of snow. In addition, this is a benefit that is not offered by the majority of minivans.

From the outside it may appear that the Chevrolet Tahoe would be hard to drive, but after you are behind the wheel you will soon find out that this is not the case. The Chevrolet Tahoe is quite manageable despite its large size.

The new Chevrolet Tahoe is sure to sell well throughout the winter months as well as the end of summer.

Ferrari VS Porsche; Who Makes the Better Automobile?

Recently at a coffee shop at a fairly wealthy section of town I met two gentlemen of leisure one was driving a Ferrari and the other a new Porsche and they both very much liked to their automobiles obviously. There seemed to be a friendly debate over which car was the best car and as I joined in the conversation, I was intrigued with this line of thought; Who Makes the Better Automobile?

So the conversation was Ferrari VS Porsche and they talked back and forth about speed, handling, fuel consumption and whose vehicle was in the shop the most; basically they were asking between Ferrari and Porsche; Who Makes the Better Automobile?

I could not help but say Chevrolet. The Chevrolet Corvette is by far better than both of their cars in handling, maintenance, stopping distance and more than comparable in acceleration, which of course for me is the key to a sports car.

Well, neither of them like this idea because they had paid way too much for their cars. And I guess I understand why they were defending their positions. Nevertheless, as the conversation progressed by said fine; the Chevrolet Corvette Callaway conversion and then they shut up.

Because the Chevrolet Corvette Callaway conversion blows the doors off both Ferrari and Porsche and it is made in the United States and it costs much less than either of their cars. In this discourse of course I was into performance; can you say; SEE YA! Considered as a 2006.

Chevrolet Aveo is GM's Inexpensive Vehicle

General Motors’ Chevrolet division is the brand under which the Chevrolet Aveo is marketed. It has been crafted as a subcompact automobile that is marketed not only in the United States and in the rest of North America but it is also marketed and offered globally. It has been said that this vehicle came from two vehicles which are the Daewoo Kalos and the Daewoo Gentra. The Daewoo Kalos was first produced back in 2002 and it was marketed using the Chevrolet Aveo name from 2004 up until 2006. As per the Daewoo Gentra, this vehicle came into production just last year, 2005, and plans for this vehicle are that come 2007, it will be then known as the Chevrolet Aveo.

Last year, the Chevrolet Aveo’s model for 2006 was introduced to the public in Shanghai. However, as per this vehicle’s debut in Europe, this was made possible during the Frankfurt auto show. General Motors claim that this vehicle is quite considered to be all new although one could notice that it still shares some parts with the outgoing 2005 model. It still held the same windshield, two windows, and some large sections of its body structure. It also holds a crisp and clean styling which is one of the changes that Chevrolet vehicles are sporting around.

As per the power that the Chevrolet Aveo holds, interested parties could actually choose between two engines. There is a 1.2 liter engine and a 1.4 liter engine. However, the choices does not end there for the Chevrolet Aveo. After all, the company has made sure that customers and Chevrolet Aveo owners could spruce up their cars with features and packages. As per standard equipment for the vehicle, the list includes air conditioning, power windows, power locks, and power side mirrors.

The price of the Chevrolet Aveo is not found on the high end. In fact, it is one of the cheapest cars around. Despite the fact that it is cheap, the Chevrolet Aveo is very much capable of delivering and performing well. Each passenger is given an enjoyable experience inside the cabin. Also, drivers find the Chevrolet Aveo a vehicle that is very fun to drive.

Chevrolet Cars In India

Introduced in India in 2003, under the banner “For a Special Journey Called Life”, the Chevrolet has emerged as one of the fastest growing brand names in India. The introduction of the brand in this market represents a significant milestone for GM in India and for the auto industry. Under the Chevrolet umbrella, GM India presently produces the Chevrolet Optra (Petrol and Diesel and the CNG version), Chevrolet Tavera, Chevrolet SRV, Chevrolet Aveo, Chevrolet U-VA and the Chevrolet Spark. The dynamic Chevrolet brand stands for quality, reliability, safety, innovation, value for money proposition, environment-friendliness and customer care.

Automobile Sector - The Indian Scenario!

Introduction:

During early 60s & 70s, automobiles came largely in twos.
In scooters, you had a Lambretta or a Vespa.
In motorcycles, you had a Bullet or a Java.
In cars, you had to choose between an Ambassador and a Fiat.
In trucks, it was either an Ashok Leyland or a Tata.
In tractors, it was between a Swaraj and a Mahindra.

This situation reflected the India of yester years. Economic reforms and deregulation have transformed that scene. Automobile industry has written a new inspirational tale. It is a tale of exciting multiplicity, unparalleled growth and amusing consumer experience – all within a few years. India has already become one of the fastest growing automobile markets in the world. This is a tribute to leaders and managers in the industry and, equally to policy planners. The automobile industry has the opportunity to go beyond this remarkable achievement. It is standing on the doorsteps of a quantum leap.

The Indian automobile industry is going through a technological change where each firm is engaged in changing its processes and technologies to maintain the competitive advantage and provide customers with the optimized products and services. Starting from the two wheelers, trucks, and tractors to the multi utility vehicles, commercial vehicles and the luxury vehicles, the Indian automobile industry has achieved splendid achievement in the recent years.

“The opportunity is staring in your face. It comes only once. If you miss it, you will not get it again”

On the canvas of the Indian economy, auto industry maintains a high-flying place. Due to its deep frontward and rearward linkages with several key segments of the economy, automobile industry has a strong multiplier effect and is capable of being the driver of economic growth. A sound transportation system plays an essential role in the country’s rapid economic and industrial development. The well-developed Indian automotive industry skillfully fulfils this catalytic role by producing a wide variety of vehicles: passenger cars, light, medium and heavy commercial vehicles, multi-utility vehicles such as jeeps, scooters, motorcycles, mopeds, three wheelers, tractors etc.

The automotive sector is one of the core industries of the Indian economy, whose prospect is reflective of the economic resilience of the country. Continuous economic liberalization over the years by the government of India has resulted in making India as one of the prime business destination for many global automotive players. The automotive sector in India is growing at around 18 per cent per annum.

“The auto industry is just a multiplier, a driver for employment, for investment, for technology” The Indian automotive industry started its new journey from 1991 with delicensing of the sector and subsequent opening up for 100 per cent FDI through automatic route. Since then almost all the global majors have set up their facilities in India taking the production of vehicle from 2 million in 1991 to 9.7 million in 2006 (nearly 7 per cent of global automobiles production and 2.4 per cent of four wheeler production).

The cumulative annual growth rate of production of the automotive industry from the year 2000-2001 to 2005-2006 was 17 per cent. The cumulative annual growth rate of exports during the period 2000-01 to 2005-06 was 32.92 per cent. The production of the automotive industry is expected to achieve a growth rate of over 20 per cent in 2006-07 and about 15 per cent in 2007-08. The export during the same period is expected to grow over 20 per cent.

The automobile sector has been contributing its share to the shining economic performance of India in the recent years. With the Indian middle class earning higher per capita income, more people are ready to own private vehicles including cars and two-wheelers. Product movements and manned services have boosted in the sales of medium and sized commercial vehicles for passenger and goods transport.

Side by side with fresh vehicle sales growth, the automotive components sector has witnessed big growth. The domestic auto components consumption has crossed rupees 9000 crore and an export of one half size of this figure.

Eye-Catching FDI Destination – INDIA!

India is on the peak of the Foreign Direct Investment wave. FDI flows into India trebled from $6 billion in 2004-05 to $19 billion in 2006-07 and are expected to quadruple to $25 billion in 2007-08. By AT Kearney's FDI Confidence Index 2006, India is the second most attractive FDI destination after China, pushing the US to the third position. It is commonly believed that soon India will catch up with China. This may also happen as China attempts to cool the economy and its protectionism measures that are eclipsing the Middle Kingdom's attractiveness. With rising wages and high land prices in the eastern regions, China may be losing its edge as a low-cost manufacturing hub. India seems to be the natural choice.

India is up-and-coming a significant manufacturer, especially of electrical and electronic equipment, automobiles and auto-parts. During 2000-2005 of the total FDI inflow, electrical and electronic (including computer software) and automobile accounted for 13.7 per cent and 8.4 per cent respectively.

In services sectors, the lead players are the US, Singapore and the UK. During 2000-2005, the total investment from these three countries accounted for about 40 per cent of the FDI in the services sector. In automobiles, the key player is Japan. During 2000-2005, Japan accounted for about 41 per cent of the total FDI in automobile, surpassing all its competitors by a big margin. India's vast domestic market and the large pool of technically skilled manpower were the magnetism for the foreign investors. Hitherto, known for knowledge-based industries, India is emerging a powerhouse of conventional manufacturing too. The manufacturing sector in the Index for Industrial Production has grown at an annual rate of over 9 per cent over the last three years. Korean auto-makers think India is a better destination than China. Though China provides a bigger market for automobiles, India offers a potential for higher growth. Clearly, manufacturing and service-led growth and the increasing consumerisation makes India one of the most important destinations for FDI.

Automotive Mission Plan 2016

The bumper-to-bumper traffic of global automobile biggies on the passage to India has finally made government sit up and take notice. In a bid to drive greater investments into the sector, ministry of heavy industries has decided to put together a 10-year mission plan to make India a global hub for automotive industry.

“The ten year mission plan will also set the roadmap for budgetary fiscal incentives” The Government of India is drawing up an Automotive Mission Plan 2016 that aims to make India a global automotive hub. The idea is to draw an innovative plan of action with full participation of the stakeholders and to implement it in mission mode to meet the challenges coming in the way of growth of industry. Through this Automotive Mission Plan, Government also wants to provide a level playing field to the players in the sector and to lay a predictable future direction of growth to enable the manufacturers in making a more informed investment decision.

Major players in the automobile sector are:

• Tata
• Mahindra
• Ashok Leyland
• Bajaj
• Hero Honda
• Daimler Chrysler
• Suzuki
• Ford
• Fiat
• Hyundai
• General Motors
• Volvo
• Yamaha
• Mazda

Foreign Companies in the Indian auto-sector

Until the mid-1990s, automobile industry in India consisted of just a handful of local companies with small capacities and obsolete technologies. Nevertheless, after the sector was thrown open to foreign direct investment in 1996, some of the global majors moved in and, by 2002, Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, General Motors, Ford and Mitsubishi set up their manufacturing bases.

Over the past four to five years, the country has seen the launch of several domestic and foreign models of passenger cars, multi-utility vehicles (MUVs), commercial vehicles and two-wheelers and a robust growth in the production of all kinds of vehicles. Moreover, owing to its low-cost, high-quality manufacturing, India has also emerged as a significant outsourcing hub for auto components and auto engineering design, rivaling Thailand. German auto-maker Volkswagen AG, too, is looking to enter India.

India is expected to be the small car hub for Japanese major Toyota. The car, a hot hatch like the Swift or Getz is likely to be exported to markets like Brazil and other Asian countries. This global car is crucial for Toyota, which is looking to improve its sales in the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) markets.

Two multi-national car majors — Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan and Hyundai Motor Company of Korea — have indicated that their manufacturing facilities will be used as a global source for small cars. The spurt in in-house product development skills and the uniquely high concentration of small cars will influence the country's ability to become a sourcing hub for sub-compact cars.

A heartening feature of the changing automobile scene in India over the past five years is the newfound success and confidence of domestic manufacturers. They are no longer afraid of competition from the international auto majors.

For instance, today, Tata Motor's Indigo leads the popular customer category, while its Indica is neck-to-neck with Hyundai's Santro in the race for the top-slot in the B category. Meanwhile M&M's Scorpio has beaten back the challenge from Toyota's Qualis to lead the SUV segment. Similarly, a few Indian winners have emerged in the motorbike market — the 150 and 180 cc Pulsar from Bajaj and 110 cc Victor from the TVS stable. The 93 cc Bike from Bajaj and 110 cc Freedom bike from LML have also emerged as winners.

Evidently, Indian players have learnt from past mistakes and developed the skills to build cheaper automobiles using `appropriate' technologies. TVS, for instance, paid an overseas source $100,000 to fine-tune home-grown engines rather than $1.5 million to import the entire engine. Similarly, M&M adapted available systems and off-the-shelf components from global suppliers to keep costs down and go for aggressive pricing. True, Indian players are still lacking in scale of operation. While economies of scale no doubt play an important role in the auto sector, a few Indian manufacturers relied on innovation rather than scale of operation for competitive advantage. For instance, Sundram Fasteners was able to achieve the feat of directly supplying radiator caps to General Motors purely on the strength of innovation in product quality. The domestic tooling industry bagged the order for the Toyota Kirloskar transmission plant in the face of stiff competition from multinational corporations. The cost of the entire job turned out to be only a fraction of the original estimate.

As the automobile industry has matured over the past decade, the auto components industry has also grown at a rapid pace and is fast achieving global competitiveness both in terms of cost and quality.

In fact, industry observers believe that while the automobile market will grow at a measured pace, the components industry is poised for a take-off. For it is among the handful of industries where India has a distinct competitive advantage. International automobile majors, such as Hyundai, Ford, Toyota and GM, which set up their bases in India in the 1990s, persuaded some of their overseas component suppliers to set up manufacturing facilities in India.

Consequently, the value of cumulative output of the auto components industry rose rapidly to Rs 30,640 crore at end-2003-04 from just Rs 11,475 crore in 1996-97. Foreign companies such as Delphi, which followed General Motors in 1995, and Visteon, that followed Ford Motors in 1998, soon realised the substantial cost advantage of manufacturing components in India.

Finding the cost lower by about 30 per cent, they began exploring the possibility of exporting back these low-cost, high-quality components to their global factories and, thus, reducing their overall costs. Not surprisingly, the industry's exports registered a more than four-fold jump to Rs 4,800 crore in 2003-04 from just Rs 1,033 crore in 1996-97.

Automobile majors such as Maruti Udyog, Toyota, Hyundai have now finalised their plans to invest in some of the critical auto components. According to the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) officials, auto component manufacturers are expected to invest about Rs 10,000 crore over the next five years at the rate of Rs 2,000 crore per annum.

According to analysts, the auto component industry could emerge as the next success story after software, pharmaceuticals, BPO and textiles. The size of the global auto component industry is estimated at $1 trillion and is set to grow further. Against this backdrop, McKinsey's latest report has estimated that the sector has the potential of increasing its exports to $25 billion by 2015 from $1.1 billion in 2004.

Threat to the Dream!

India’s expedition to become a global auto manufacturing hub could be seriously challenged by its inability to uphold its low-cost production base. A survey conducted by the research, KMPMG firm reveals that the Indian auto component manufacturers are increasingly becoming skeptical about sustaining the low-cost base as overheads including labour costs and complex tax regime are constantly rising.

The survey said many executives believe that India’s cost advantage is grinding down fast as labour costs are constantly increasing and retaining employees is becoming more and more difficult. Increased presence of global automotive companies in the country was cited as one of the reasons for the high erosion rate.

Indian auto businesses will only flourish if they boost investments in automation. In the longer term, cost advantage will only be retained if Indian capital can be used to develop low-cost automation in manufacturing. This is the way to preserve our low cost.

Global auto majors are also cynical about India’s low cost manufacturing base. India taxation remains a big disadvantage. This is not about tax rates it is just about unnecessary complexity. But some companies also believe there is scope for reducing the cost of doing business.

In spite of this there are opportunities to exploit lower costs right across the board. It’s true that labour costs are definitely increasing but they are still five per cent of the total operational costs. The labour costs can be further reduced if companies are successful in bringing down other costs like reducing power costs. Low-cost base can never last long. The company said Indian industry has till now relied on very labour intensive model but it would have to switch to a more capital intensive model now.

Price of Cars

What would you look for in your dream car? A car that is stylish, has enough space for a family of four, is fuel-efficient, has low maintenance cost, and one that would fetch good resale value five years down the line. You have options available at a budget ranging as low as Rs. 2 lakhs to as high as Rs. 15 lakhs and above across various segments.

Segment D cars are those which are available at below Rs. 5 lakhs. This segment was being predominantly ruled by the Tata and Maruti. But with the introduction of Chevrolet Spark and Aveo U-VA, General Motors India has thrown a tough competition to the Indian auto giants. The stupendous growth the GM car sales bears testimony to the growing popularity of Chevy brands in India. Hyundai and Fiat are the other major players in this segment.

Segment C is constituted of the cars in the price band of Rs. 5 lakhs to Rs. 10 lakhs. Again, this segment has witnessed a phenomenal growth in options thanks General Motors' Chevrolet SRV, New Aveo Anniversary edition. With the launch of Chevrolet Aveo and Optra Magnum Diesel which have a class defined performance, GM India is eying a 10% market share by 2010.

Segment B, that ranges between Rs. 10 laks to Rs. 15 lakhs, is primarily dominated by the diesel cars like Scoda Octavia, Toyota Camry and Toyota Corolla. Recently launched Chevrolet Optra Magnum and Optra Platinum have further helped heat up the competition.

Segment A ranging from Rs. 15 lakhs and above, however, is ruled by Daimler Chrysler, and with the launch of its M Class its has further strengthened its position in this segment. Amongst other players Honda CRV, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata are few of the worth mentioning names here. However, General Motors' Captiva is by far the most awaited vehicle in the A segment which is expected to be launched by he year-end.

Diesel Cars

Though Indian car market has been predominantly ruled by petrol driven cars, there has been a change in the trend being noticed over last few years. People are now gradually shifting to diesel cars as diesel cars are more fuel efficient and economical. Moreover, diesel cars seem to have more power than petrol driven cars.

Today there are just a handful options available in the market for Diesel cars. Though TATA Indica Diesel has been the bestseller in its segment, it is facing strong competition from Maruti Zen Diesel and Fiat Palio.

In the luxury sedan segment, General Motors' recently launched Optra Magnum TCDi is receiving rave reviews from auto experts. The Optra Magnum is giving tough competition to its counterparts like Skoda Octavia and Toyota Corolla which have been dominating the diesel segment for a long time. Optra Magnum TCDi has an engine that utilizes second-generation common rail technology. Diesel fuel is injected at a very high pressure of 1,600 bar through a multi-step injection process. This results in more efficient combustion and performance. The new engine also has an Electric Vacuum Control Turbo, which further enhances performance. The Optra diesel is faster and more powerful than many petrol driven cars currently on the market, delivering peak power of 120.5 ps and peak torque of 314 Nm which is more than 100 Nm higher than the Skoda Octavia.

In addition, the car's Engine Management System of Optra Magnum was programmed and re-engineered to ensure that the engine delivers optimum performance in all driving conditions in India on locally available fuel.

Suzuki Maruti SX4 and Honda City - Compared

Since the introduction of the Honda City in the market it has been very successful in keeping its competition with the likes of Ford, GM, Hyundai at bay attributed to the Civic's solid brand value which has made others at the trail playing catch up. Suzuki would like to try to topple down Honda's City with its new Maruti SX4. How good is Maruti? Does it have what it takes to compete with Honda City?

Let’s face it not everyone are attracted to the Honda City with its protruding Honda antenna and compared to the Maruti SX4, appearance wise it looks like Angelina Jolie while the City looks more like Dr. Spock but of course Suzuki will not agree with such comparison especially since the ad campaign tagline for the Maruti is “Men are Back”. But in fairness to the Maruti, it is sporty and sexy plus it has successfully hidden its hatchback roots.

The SX4 has a nice flat integrated dashboard and sporty touches of chrome everywhere, which adds up to its good looks unfortunately it failed to surpass the hand feel and rich textures found on the City’s interiors. But to make up for what it lacks, the SX4 has leather seats, steering remote control airbags, and pockets for bottle holders on all four-doors.

In terms of exterior, it is quite obvious that the SX4 is longer, taller, and bigger. But you know Honda it won’t just sit around and wait for competition to stomp over it, the engineers at Honda has made sure that the size of the Civic will not become a disadvantage. Honda’s engineers have developed a backseat that can comfortably seat three people despite its being narrower than the SX4.

The SX4 despite its larger size has some drawbacks like for instance the armrest in the back of protrudes into the third person’s spine just imagine if sudden brakes are applied that would definitely hurt. And that’s not all the tunnel in the flooring of the SX4 does not provide much legroom. It boot also loses out marginally. On the other hand the Civic despite its small size manages to pack in a lot of space with more headroom, legroom not to mention more space for the driver.

In terms of driving performance the City can provide you with the regular 77 bhp or V-Tec powerplant with 100 bhp, which is very much closer to the SX4. The Maruti SX4 is powered by a new M-16 engine, which has one twin overhead cams, a driveby-wire throttle and revs up a healthy 102 bhp compared to Cuty’s 77 bhp. The Maruti has also an extra 2 kgm of torque which obviously makes it much faster on the road.

When it comes to accelerating from 0 to 100, the SX4 is the winner but in terms of gear now that is another story. This is because the SX4 seems to lose steam at around 5,000 rpm while the torque curve on the City is by far crispier and linear making it perfectly suitable for city driving. The Honda City has also a more refined engine.

But of course the comparison doesn’t end just yet both the City’s and SX4’s gearbox are good although the SX4 would require for a much firmer hand. On the hand the City as expected is light and easy. Over bumps and undulations the SX4’s steering gets jumpy while the Honda City’s steering although light to handle feels unsettling at high speeds.

Driving through traffic, the SX4 and the City both scored well however the SX4 leads in terms of ground clearance where the City suffers caused by its low ground clearance. The SX4 with its 16-inch rims and 205 tires provide better grip but so does the City with its ABS. The City wins when it comes to fuel efficiency but in terms of styling and price the SX4 wins it by landslide. Now that we know the advantages of both cars it would be easier to choose which one to buy.

Maruti Future Plans

From this Sunday, I am starting a series of weekly specials. These will be insider news about future company model programs, happenings, stuff that you will not have read in any of the enthusiast magazines and stuff that when they publish is accompanied by 'SCOOP' in caps and bold. As none of the media outlets have any use for my rantings, as accurate as they may be, I will use my blog as an outlet.

Maruti has some ambitious plans for 2006. The company will launch the Escudo, the replacement for the Grand Vitara, already available in international markets. The Escudo, based on the GM-Suzuki Chevy Equinox platform, is a handsome looking vehicle and would be a good flagship and image builder, something which the aging Vitara could not do.

After all this, Maruti wants to have a look at the Corolla-Octavia-Optra segment with an all new sedan that Suzuki is developing. This is expected next year only. By the end of this year, Maruti's diesel plant and its new facility in Manesar will be operational. And that would mean additional headache for its competition.

The Wagon R will get an overhaul this year. The Solio that Maruti showcased at the Auto Expo this year is an indicator to things of the future. The reworked Wagon R will have more legroom and a new face as well. I expect a diesel to be slotted in when Suzuki is ready with Fiat's 1.3-litre Multijet.

The Zen will finally be put to rest, a hard act to do with a model that is still selling a few thousands every month. But the Zen brandname will not die. I expect the MR Wagon to be introduced in India with the Zen brand name. The MR Wagon is a nifty small car powered in Japan by a 660cc engine but the Indian version may get a bigger engine. The Swift sedan is also on the anvil, most possibly by end of the year with a petrol and the new Multijet diesel. The Swift itself will get the diesel shot as well.

Small Cars in India

It's the small car segment that has attracted the most attention and investment since the car industry was thrown open to competition in the late 1990s. Prior to that Indian car market was dominated by Maruti only. Maruti launched its small car Maruti 800 in the year 1984, and it became the first choice of most of the families in India. South Korean company Hyundai launched Santro in 1998, followed by another Korean car maker Daewoo that launched Matiz. By the year 1999 Tata group launched their first car Indica. Italian company Fiat also stepped into the small car market with the launch of Palio.

After General Motors over took Daewoo, General Motors India entered the small car market with the launch of its much awaited mini car - The Chevrolet Spark. The entry of Chevrolet Spark has intensified the price war among the car manufactures and they are trying to provide better value for money products for its customers. Chevrolet Spark offers better value for money proposition than its closest competitor Zen Estilo. With its new design Spark looks more contemporary. In riding and handling Spark is more comfortable than its immediate competitor Zen Estilo.

The Spark has outstanding safety features. 51 percent of entire body shell is made of high strength steel. The front end design of spark is among the first of its class to comply with the new European regulations on pedestrian safety. The friendly front face picks up the attention of every car lover. With the stylish compact design and body even the minute detail of the new spark invites attention. Attractive, distinctively shaped head lights and round tail lights adds more to its external beauty. A combination of short body overhangs, a steeply rising shoulder line and converging lines at the front make the spark a real head turner.

Zen Estilo Is Maruti Playing On Its Strengths

The Zen Estilo is a cute car, though not cute as a rabbit like the Matiz. It is more of a warped cuteness. It's more like a cross between Drew Barrymore and the Mogwai from Gremlins. To put it in perspective, I loved it, my wife hated it. It should have been the other way around since it is supposed to be a cute car.

But it's not the cuteness that the Zen Estilo is about. The new hatchback from Maruti is all about the company playing on its strengths and playing to the gallery. So what we have is a very dependable package at a very attractive price.

The dependable package comes from the ALTO platform which already provides the underpinnings for the Alto and Wagon R models from Maruti. The ALTO platform is recognized in Suzuki under a large number of names (YC3 / YC4 / YC5 / YR3 / YR6 / YL6 etc etc) though the iteration which provides the underpinnings here is the YL6 version. The body shell look quite similar to the just out-of-production MR Wagon though I am not sure if Maruti shipped some moulds and dies from Japan to India.

The Estilo comes with the same engine as the Wagon R and some bits and pieces in the interiors can be traced to some other Maruti models. Sure cost saving is the buzzword here, though it walks the thin wire of adding to the sales volumes and eating the Wagon R for breakfast. The closeness to the Wagon R cannot be avoided and Maruti marketing will have a tough task of positioning the Wagon R and Zen Estilo with minimum cannibalization.

Maruti is again playing the introductory price gimmick with the Estilo - the car will be available for an unbelievable price of INR 319,000 till the time Maruti marketing boffins decide that enough is enough. The gimmick worked very well with the Swift and it seems to be working fine with the Estilo - with 10,000 bookings in 10 days.

Volvo C30 Targets Generation Y

The Volvo C30, the newest entry-level of the automaker, has one great mission to do – and that is to attract the young generation drivers and make a purchase.

Volvo runs the extra mile to promote its compact hatchback. As a fact, it is going outside its comfort zones by invoking a new maxim: "The Volvo you have when you don't want a Volvo.” The hatchback is especially engineered to respond to the modern needs of customers without compromising affordability. The four-seat hatchback will be the cheapest Volvo in the showroom when it goes on sale this April. The car, which is slotted under the Volvo S40 sedan, is priced at $34,450.

"The Volvo C30's target audience does not currently shop Volvo," said Alan Desselss, the managing director for Volvo Cars Australia. "The C30 heralds a whole new era for us. It will bring people into the brand that would not previously have considered a Volvo."

When asked about the convincing power of the C30, Desselss has this to say: "We're not out to convince them of anything. Our target audience is smart. They are well informed and they do their research. So we are going to engage them. We're going to ask them for their opinion on the car. Do they love it, or hate it? Do they want it, or not?" Desselss further noted, "The C30 is a departure from the traditional Volvo mindset. It's not a family car. It will appeal to a younger buyer, an active single or couple. And, at the moment, just one-in-eight Volvo buyers are in the 'pre-family' phase of their life."

The automaker noted that majority of its consumers are aged between 36 and 54. Desselss believes the Volvo C30 will resonate well with the under-35s group. The Volvo C30's goal is to bring customers into the 'family' earlier than any vehicle in its current lineup can. Desselss added, "We anticipate that three of every four C30 buyers will have not owned a Volvo before."

The Volvo C30 hatchback shares much of its auto parts with its sibling - the bigger S40 sedan. The Volvo steering rack, suspension, engines and some body panels are the same. Volvo Cars, the Swedish brand of the Ford Motor Co., allowed the C30 to use some components of the Focus including its turbocharged engine. "The diesel engine it uses is a very advanced unit, and costs significantly more than a petrol engine to produce," said Desselss. "We think buyers will be attracted to the diesel for environmental reasons."

Todd Hallenbeck, the Volvo spokesman, said, "We expect they will know these things and we're not going to try and hide it. We think they will see the value, refinement, resale and other advantages that the C30 has. "We'd love to steal sales from the Focus XR5. It's a competitor just like the Audi A3, BMW 1-Series and Volkswagen Golf."

Volvo Enters SUV Segment with Volvo XC90

Volvo Cars took a stab at entering the now popular sports utility vehicle segment and its entry to this competition is the Volvo XC90 which would be racing with other vehicles like the BMW X5, the Acura MDX, and the Infiniti FX to the top spot. This vehicle has actually been in production since the year 2003 and it is known as a crossover sports utility vehicle.

Known as a midsize luxury crossover sports utility vehicle, the Volvo XC90 has been actually built on the P2 platform that is also used by the Volvo S80. This platform is also used by other larger Volvo vehicles as well. According to Volvo Cars, the Volvo XC90 is their top selling vehicle in the United States. This vehicle’s sales take up around twenty five percent of their total sales in that area. Rumors have it that another update on the Volvo XC90 would be coming next year in 2007. This vehicle has already proven itself worthy for it has already bagged the North American Truck of the Year award in 2003 as well as the Motor Trend magazine’s Sport Utility of the Year for the same year.

The present year’s version of the Volvo XC90 has been made available in two trim levels which are the 2.5 T and the V8. Both hold four doors and could take in up to a maximum of seven passengers inside its luxurious cabin. The Volvo XC90 looks more as a European vehicle rather than as an American or Japanese creation. In fact, some critics even find this sports utility vehicle to be more attractive that the already luxurious BMW X5. And yes, it is also much cheaper than the mentioned vehicle.

During its introduction, the Volvo XC90 2.5 T trim level comes equipped with a standard 2.5 liter I5 turbo engine producing 208 horsepower. It can achieve 17 mpg in the city and some 23 mpg for the highway. To assist in the excellent delivery of the vehicle, there is a five speed automatic transmission system made standard. As per the other trim level, the V8, this comes with a 4.4 liter V8 engine that could produce some 311 units of horsepower. Driving through the city would give you the statistics of 15 mpg while as per the highway would give you 21 mpg. Standard for this trim level is a six speed automatic transmission system with overdrive.

For the best quality OEM Volvo parts, Volvo replacement parts, and performance Volvo accessories, interested parties and Volvo owners could shop at Same Day Car Parts. Same Day Car Parts is constantly updating its Volvo parts and Volvo accessories catalog.

Volvo Cars Turns 80

Volvo Cars has turned 80 on April 14. In connection to this remarkable milestone, the Swedish automaker rolled off a production consists of antique and modern product lines. As part of its 80th anniversary, Volvo showcased a parade of cars through the Gothenburg city which is its very own hometown.

The parade of cars includes the Volvo OV4 - the automaker’s very first car. The parade flaunted eighty years of history which has rolled from the Volvo museum in the outskirts of the city to downtown Gothenburg where the public was invited to gaze at Volvo’s engineering and vehicle know-how.

To highlight the event, Carl-Magnus Skogh, 82, a veteran Swedish rally legend, drove a 1927 convertible, the first car that Volvo mass-produced. Skogh was one of the renowned names who have helped the company to become popular on the world map. In the 1960s, along with racing legends like Joginder "Flying Sikh" Singh and Tom Trana, Skogh earned Volvo headlines worldwide with his achievements on the international rally circuit from the Saharan Africa to Greek Acropolis.

Skogh joined Volvo in 1963 after a successful stint as a rally driver for Swedish competitor Saab. He won the Swedish championship in 1960 and 1961, driving a SAAB 96. In 1965, he won the Acropolis Rally in a Volvo Amazon. Skogh’s automotive expertise was essential to the automaker not only on race courses around the world, but also in product research and development. In 1978, Skogh set the world speed record for diesel cars with 209 kph in a Volvo 340 that he had modified. The rally legend has also contributed to improving driveability and stability features of the cars.

"I designed the chassis features of the 850,” stressed Skogh. The rally legend intimated that he was happy about driving the most important car in the parade. The CEO of Volvo Trucks, Leif Johansson and the CEO of Volvo Cars, Fredrik Arp, were his passengers. "I feel good today. It's an experience to have Leif Johansson and Fredrik Arp in the backseat," said Skogh.

It can be recalled that in 1999, the Swedish premium cars and trucks manufacturer was split into two companies, the Ford Motor Company bought the automobile division. Through the years, Volvo has established a good standing when it comes to both durability and safety. At present, the company is striving to wipe away the boxy image to complete an excellent package.

The Swedish automaker founded in 1997 has eventually become a leading global manufacturer of commercial vehicles. To grab a bigger slice of the automotive market, the founders entertained several upgrades and modifications. The ordinary Volvo brake dust shields and other auto parts and equipment from the automaker were enhanced to offer superb efficiency, ergonomics and safety.

Honda to Increase Presence in Indian Auto Market

The Asian continent is fast becoming a huge market for automobiles. While some European markets seem to be slowing down and the U.S. auto sales is hampered by housing problems, Asian countries are increasingly becoming a favorite of car manufacturers. In fact, China and Japan are only next to the United States in terms of auto sales.

Aside from these two countries, another Asian country is fast becoming a hub for car manufacturers. India is now the fourth biggest car market in the Asian continent and car companies are taking notice. Not so long ago, General Motors announced their interest in the growing auto market of the country. Aside from General Motors, the alliance of Nissan and Renault has already started testing the Indian auto market. Following their steps towards the high ranks is the second largest Japanese car manufacturer Honda.

The company announced that they will be manufacturing and selling compact cars in the region by the year 2009. The company’s decision to market smaller cars in the country is due to the fact that the three-quarters of all the cars sold in India are compact cars. General Motors, Volkswagen, Nissan, and Renault have also announced that they will be manufacturing small cars for the country. Honda's small cars to be sold in India will be built on a plant to be constructed in Rajasthan. The company reported that they expect to spend $728 million in the construction of the new assembly facility.

Honda's announcement to enter the small car market in India is fueled by the prediction that the country’s demand for small cars will continue to increase in the near future. It has been estimated that by the year 2016, annual car sales in India will reach 3 million units. This predicted car sales will be divided by car manufacturers such as Suzuki and Hyundai, both of which have an already established buyer base in the country, as well as other brands like Nissan, Renault, General Motors, Volkswagen, Honda and other domestic and international brands who are willing to invest in India.

Although it is speculated that Honda will be manufacturing small cars, the Japanese car company is yet to name what model they will be producing at the Rajasthan production plant. Upon completion, the assembly facility will be expected to produce 60,000 vehicles annually. By the year 2014, Honda plans to expand the facility and increase its production capacity to 200,000 per year. The facility will handle all the processes handled by a full time automobile assembly plant. Although Honda is yet to announce the full scale of jobs to be handled by the facility it is expected that the brake assembly for vehicles will be one of the tasks of the plant.

To meet the expected production output, the new plant will be employing 4,000 workers. This means that Honda will not only benefit from the growing market in India but they will also be helping the country’s economy.

Air Powered Cars Coming To Your City Soon

You have heard of the car that can run on water. Now, there is this car that runs on compressed air. Sound too good to be true? Not really. Indian automaker Tata Motors has already signed a deal with MDI (Moteur Development International), a French company to produce these cars for the Indian market. MDI is a small family owned company headed by an ex-Formula One racer named Guy Negre.

With a top speed of 110 km/h (about 68 miles/hr), this car can go up to 150 km (approx 92 miles) on one tank of compressed air. Refueling takes about 4 hours at home using a electric pump or about 2 minutes at specially equipped gas stations. It comes with 3 seats and a small storage space at the back. It is only 2.63m in length. It took almost 14 years of research and development time to make this car a reality for Guy Negre.

Other poluted countries could soon follow the Indian example and sign deals with MDI. The "Zero Pollution Car" as it is being referred to by environmentalists, will definitely make a mark if it is successful in India. Imagine spending almost nothing to fill your car and also helping the environment.

In the future, it is possible that hybrid versions of this air powered cars could soon be in the market. Instead of Electric-Gas Hybrid, other combinations could be Electric-Air or Solar-Air Hybrids.

Get ready, the automotive world is about to change. Innovations are going to make it possible for viable combinations of powering automobiles previously thought as impossible.

The Car That Runs On Air

The auto industry is bracing itself for its biggest shift since Henry Ford used an assembly line to roll out Model Ts. The race to develop and implement a new kind of fuel - both environmentally-conscious and affordable - has been going on for years now, but we’re still a while away from a full-scale gasoline overhaul. Ethanol, biodiesel, hydrogen, and lithium batteries are all vying for the title of gas killer, but there’s a new contender making a lot of noise - and that contender is...air? Well, compressed air.

Moteur Development International (MDI) is a research and development firm that has tinkered with the concept of an Air Car for nearly fifteen years. Based in Nice, France, engineers at MDI now say their latest design, the MiniCAT – CAT stands for Compressed Air Technologies – is ready for production. More importantly, Tata Motors (India’s largest automotive manufacturer) seems to concur, and have agreed to initially build several thousand of these vehicles, with plans for expansion in the next couple years for production both in India and Europe.

How it Works In a MiniCAT, compressed air is stored in a tank underneath the vehicle and funnels into pistons where it expands to about 15 times the compressed level. The de-crompression of the air creates pressure to push the pistons which propels the car. The expansion of the air also creates a by-product of cold air that can be used to run the air-conditioning. The end result is an efficient engine generating plenty of power and having zero emissions. The biggest hurdle for any new fuel is in its availability and distribution. Here air has an obvious advantage.

Compressed-air “pumps” are inexpensive to manufacture and implement on a large scale, and as a renewable and abundant resource, air fill-ups would be far cheaper than gasoline is today. Some estimate that a full tank of air – which for a MiniCAT is about 200 miles of driving – could be as little as $3. Also in development is the CityCAT, which uses a dual-function engine to generate higher speeds and a longer range. The compressed air system is still central to propulsion, but a second system is added that takes over at speeds over 35 mph. This system is similar to General Motors’ Flex Fuel technology, meaning it can run on gasoline, biodiesel, ethanol, or other sources. When the second system is running it generates air that can be compressed and stored for later use by the central system.

Introducing it to the Populace MDI has built compressed air engines with 2, 4, and 6 cylinders and is looking for the best way to introduce their vehicles to the market.

One goal is a taxi fleet – after all, taxis drive a lot more than the rest of us and are a good way to generate buzz. MiniCATS seem built for the city, and with several urban hubs in Europe considering a ban on gasoline-powered vehicles, the air-powered vehicle could be a popular choice indeed. CityCATs, despite their name, are made more for the suburban commuter. The Tata Motors agreement is a major first step in a very long walk. The Indian manufacturer has quickly become one of the world’s largest automakers, specializing in large trucks and buses. MDI has already built concept versions of pick-up trucks and vans for their fuel systems, and even larger vehicles are likely in the works. No final figures on pricing have been determined, but Tata and MDI estimate that MiniCATs would be around the equivalent of $10,000 in euros. Both vehicles are quick and nimble on city streets, with comparable acceleration to other economy-class cars. The higher-cylinder versions can provide more boost, but the MiniCAT tops out at around 68 mph, so it can get out on the freeway if it must. This flexibility would be more important in the U.S. should MDI expand production to our shores.

For more on these vehicles, check out MDI’s website. Already some are beginning to eulogize gasoline as a thing of the past – ethanol and other resources are certainly gunning for it. But in this race for the future, a late entrant might have what it takes to win it all. Compressed air systems are easy to manufacture, distribute, and replenish. Time will tell if running on air will have an entirely new meaning. At AutoExtra.com we strive to bring you the latest and greatest happenings in the automotive universe. Stay tuned for more on the cutting edge of fuel technologies.

Joint Venture Of Suzuki And Bellsonica

Bellsonica Auto Component Pvt Ltd., the Maruti-Suzuki joint-venture with Bellsonica Corp., is expected to reduce the contribution per vehicle of Maruti's existing sheet metal suppliers. The joint-venture was set up in July last year and is setting up a plant in Manesar, near Maruti's new production plant. Maruti-Suzuki holds 30% in the joint-venture with the rest held by Bellsonica – one of Suzuki's traditional suppliers in Japan.

The biggest loser is expected to be Jay Bharat Maruti, Maruti's traditional medium-sized sheet metal components supplier. Along with Caparo Maruti, Mark Auto (now SKH Metals) and Rasandik Industries, JBML accounts for most of Maruti's sheet metal requirements. JBML is one of Maruti's top five suppliers in terms of value.

Bellsonica's Indian venture is likely to overlap the most with JBML's share in Maruti's sheet metal component requirements, supplying the same type of components. Sources pointed out that JBML, which supplies around 90 sheet metal components for the just launched SX4 saloon, was offered less than 20 components by Maruti for the Model P, a small car under development by Suzuki, slated for launch in October 2008, to be manufactured in Manesar and slated for export to the European market. Maruti is targeting exports of 150,000 units per year of exports of the Model P, apart from huge domestic consumption, once it is introduced. The Model P will also be badged as a Nissan and that will account for 50,000 units as well.

Ironically, Bellsonica has been one of JBML's technology providers in the past. BML is not the only probable loser because of Bellsonica's Indian venture; Caparo Maruti, Mark Auto and Rasandik Industries are all likely to see their average content per vehicle with Maruti go down in the near future.

In another development, the four sheet metal suppliers were amongst the top ten worst rated suppliers at a recent Maruti supplier convention.

Not surprisingly, the sheet metal suppliers have been working at increasing the share of non-Maruti business in their total revenue. JBML has established a number of companies under the "Neel" umbrella which are responsible for non-Maruti businesses. These include a joint-venture with Thai Summit. JBML is already supplying to Tata Motors, Toyota, Ford, Ashok Leyland, Honda and several two wheeler companies as well as Tier 1 suppliers like Delphi.

Caparo Maruti is also aggressively expanding beyond Maruti. It is already supplying to General Motors and Eicher Motors and is looking at expanding to other OEMs as well.

Kerkorian Makes Play for GM General Motors

With Delphi in bankruptcy, GM will take a huge hit and corporate high powered investors are looking at ways to take advantage of an asset rich company, which simply needs to re-invent itself a little. General Motors has re-invented itself many times. During the Deming Years, during World War II and now it is time in this present period to rachet up the volume and go again.

What does Kerkorian have in mind this time? Obviously the savvy investor Kerkorian wants to protect his investment, but also understands the value and potential of General Motors as many analysts chock them off as a no longer viable company. One recent financial anal-ist said that there is a 30% chance that the Delphi bankruptcy would trigger a bankruptcy filing from General Motors.

What would Alfred Sloan have to say about this current predicament with enormous under funded pension problems, recent loss in market share and the issues with Delphi’s bankruptcy? As the financial news causes scare tactics amongst investors, Kerkorian is busy increasing his holdings in General Motors, finding the stock at a record low buying opportunity. What else does Kerkorian have planned for the company, able to wield even more weight in corporate decision-making at GM. Think on this.

Glimpses Into The Tata One Lakh Car

Forewarning: These are just my Sunday morning musings on the upcoming Tata small car and not entirely supported by facts.

The prototypes are undergoing testing and the small budget car is reported to be only 20% off its price target. This is a commendable job if the customers get a competent product.

So, how is Tata planning to keep the cost of the INR 100,000 within the target price?

Part I: Buy land cheap. Best, convince the state government to capture it for you and then sell it to you for throwaway prices.

Tata's small car plant in Singur, West Bengal is reported to be coming up on a land which the company purchased at throw-away prices. While the farmers may now be realizing that they have been taken for a ride (the realization no doubt helped by education received from certain political groups), the negative publicity received by the company in the wake of the land dispute is slowly being countered by immaculate press releases that flood my inbox every week. Things like "Tata opening an educational institute in Singur" and "Tata training Singur residents" are the stuff of press releases that the company' well-oiled PR machinery sends to numerous journalists every week. By 2008, when the plant starts churning out cars, Tata will again be the respected name that it is considered to be.

A certain Mamata Banerjee - once a stoic opponent of the Tata Singur plant - is surprisingly silent nowadays. Has she been 'convinced' of the Tata's honorable intentions?

The farmers never mattered anyways. The way of acquiring land has always been a well debated issue in India. There is no point in talking about SEZs in this space as they have already been written about in various other forums. But, even without SEZs, any mega project - like a car plant - manages to extract the maximum, and some more, from the state governments in terms of sops.

Take the upcoming Tata plant in the state of Uttaranchal. The land was (and I 'guess' it) purchased at INR 225 per-square-metre, less than half the cost of the first allotments in the SIDCUL industrial park. All 1,000 acres of it. Tatas then convinced the state government to waive off the stamp duty as well and then get electricity supply for the plant at rock-bottom prices.

Quality Cars

Of course if they do prep the car prior to wash it slows the speed, cuts down the volume of cars that can be washed in the day and changes the consistency of each car washed due to the human element. Now, if you are looking at new cars, is buying or leasing a better option for you.

By 1914, he was building more cars in one day than most competitors could build in one year. By downplaying the appearance of the cars-calling them "wrecks" he allowed the media to expect dented, scratched, beat-up cars. By cleverly designing their buildings, they can stack 10-12 cars between the order point and pickup, so the customer waits 3 minutes but moves every 18 seconds so time flies by. I had names for my cars and machines and an uncommon ability to repair them. Cars have changed a lot over the years and my uncle wants someone who can not only turn a wrench, but be able to read a computer. If you have purchased energy efficient cars or heating/cooling devices make sure you claim this credit on your income tax.

Well really there are many things they can do, from giving out coupons to senior citizens, for 80% off to free detailing for the local church who has cars donated to them to sell. You may have a great idea for flying cars, but if consumers are not ready for your product you may not be able to turn your idea into a successful business. After gathering this information, he started taking me in the direction of the jeeps and sports cars.

For example, if you were selling big, gas-guzzling cars, you would stress the comfort, luxury interiors, prestige, reliability and smooth riding capacity of the car. That's why many automobile makers design cars that are categorized as "woman cars".

Toyota Prius Hybrid

The latest breakthrough in automobile technology is the hybrid cars. These cars are proving successful economically and ecologically. These cars have proven that hybrid car is a better option than even electric cars.

The Toyota’s Prius is the first hybrid car to be produced in mass production. With the fuel consumption down to 55 miles per gallon, this car has appealed to the public in general. The Toyota Prius is the Gen-next car not just because it is a hybrid car, but also because of the feature that has been incorporated in this car.

Toyota Prius incorporates many other features that show how the cars will be in time to come. It has four 32-bit computers that control almost everything in the car with a wire – throttles, brakes, air cooling and heating. The car has two electric motors which work as generators when brakes are applied thus charging the batteries automatically. Once the engine has reached certain temperature, the engine shuts off and the car is driven solely by electric motors. This has very low noise emissions, therefore it is called the stealth mode. Redesigned tyres provide lower rolling resistance thus reducing road friction.

Toyota Prius offers a smooth gas-engine and electric motor combination. The car has received an AT-PZEV (Advanced Technology Partical Zero Emission Vehicle) certification which shows that this is a low polluting car. It is ideal for people looking for combination of a good fuel efficient car and car that has useful technology to go with it.

On the technological side the Toyota Prius has been equipped with Bluetooth, wireless technology (this is to keep you connected even when you are traveling from one place to another) Smart Key System. If you like to listen to music while on the drive, Toyota Prius has features which will delight you, the available auxiliary jack provides Toyota Prius with a capability to play MP3 or WMA playback music. What’s more Toyota Prius has a back-up camera for enhanced security.

Toyota Highlander Hybrid

When it comes to hybrid SUVs, many people were not quite sure how they would work out. Could an SUV really still keep all the room and still get great fuel economy? Well, Toyota has proven that the concept of a hybrid SUV can really work with their new Toyota Highlander hybrid. While you can expect to pay a bit more for the Toyota Highlander hybrid than you would for the regular gas engine, many people feel that the benefits are worth the extra cost in the beginning.

Superior Fuel Economy
When it comes to SUVs, one of the main problems with them has been that they are not very good on fuel. Since they are heavier, bigger, and the aerodynamics of these vehicles are not as efficient as on cars, they use far more fuel than a car does. While there have been hybrid cars making headlines for a few years now when it comes to fuel economy, now the Toyota Highlander hybrid is planning to do the same thing. Believe it or not, you can get fuel mileage on this new hybrid SUV that is just as good as any cars out there today. So, the Toyota Highlander is definitely offering fuel economy that cannot be beaten by any other SUV.

Better for the Environment
Also, the new Toyota Highlander hybrid is also much better for the environment than conventional SUVs. When you are coasting down a hill or stopped in traffic, this hybrid actually shuts off the engine. This means that you are not only using less gas, but you are also not contributing as much emissions to the air as well. Saving the environment and cutting down on emissions is important and the Toyota Highlander hybrid can help you save the environment.

Passenger Room
When you sit in the Toyota Highlander hybrid, one thing you are going to notice is that there is plenty of room for passengers. Even the back seat has plenty of legroom, even when you have the seats in the forward position. However, while they offer a third row seat that is supposed to seat two more people, it is difficult to get to the back seat and it has very little room to work with.

Quick and Powerful Performance
Once you get the Toyota Highlander hybrid on the road you are definitely going to notice a difference. Even though you start up the car and start off, the engine in the SUV may not even be running. When you are at low speeds the gas engine is going to stop, but this doesn’t mean you will lose out on power and performance. Whenever you need the power, it is right there, but when you don’t need it you won’t have to worry about it eating up your gas.
